bis 27.02. | #0319ARTatBerlin | Die Ausstellung „L’amoureuse en secret“ mit der Künstlerin Katrin Bremermann wird ab dem 16. Januar 2016 in der Galerie Martin Mertens zu sehen sein. Es ist die erste Einzelausstellung von Katrin Bremermann in der Galerie Martin Mertens.

The artist, born in Bremen in 1965, describes herself as a painter who works as a sculptor. A closer look at her „wax drawings“ shows how accurate this statement is. These lacquer drawings on paper seem very graphical, clear and two-dimensional. Viewed up close, the sheets are rather structured as a relief. Black grid, hatches, lines or dots are first applied on the paper, followed by a layer of wax, which makes the sheet partially transparent. Then, the final paint is applied with stencils. The gentle depth effect and blur of these works on the waxed paper, or the delicate lines of many sheets, go completely lost alongside the dominant primary color in the photography. The colored areas resemble patterns, architectural blueprints or unknown characters. They are finely balanced and mutually dialogue with each other. The sheets live by the play of positives and negatives and between flatness and depth of the surface. The color forms leave enough room for associations.
Besides the works on paper, we present pictures on canvas and wall objects. Bremermann’s objects transfer the works on paper into the third dimension and are in fact a mixture of sculpture and painting. The paint runs around the sides of the object. The rectangular canvas breaks out from its traditional form, expands to irregular object and plays – supported by the shapes of the painted surfaces – with the viewer’s perception. Therewith she follows the long tradition of the shaped canvas which was represented, amongst others, by Kenneth Noland, Ellsworth Kelly, Barnett Newman, and Richard Tuttle. Nevertheless, she developed a unique interaction between painted form of the color space and the construction of the object; between the real and illusionistic dimensionality. Like she says, her work in the studio is more a laboratory practice.
Through cutting her own path and succeeding in introducing new aspects into the long history of geometric abstraction, Bremerman has thrilled many collectors and critics. The international art magazine Modern Painters counted her to 24 „Artists to Watch 2015“.
