Their works are still shown in the gallery today. In autumn 2007 the Konrad Fischer Gallery opened – also with an exhibition of Carl Andre – an additional gallery space in Berlin. A second gallery space in Munich followed soon and in 2003 Sprüth Magers opened their gallery in London. Benhadj & Djilali Galerie organises exhibitions of contemporary art from various disciplines in gallery spaces in Villa Heike in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen, district Lichtenberg. The gallery is both a commercial gallery and a venue for non-commercial, socially relevant exhibitions and projects that aim for high public and media attention. Gallery owner and curator Yasmine Benhadj-Djilali transformed the Benhadj & Djilali Gallery, then still located on Torstraße in Berlin-Mitte, into a temporary museum from 2018 to 2019 and presented the exhibition ONE DAY | BERLIN there. In it, artist Adrian Sierra Garcia intervened in the way we perceive time and space with an installation occupying the entire gallery space, creating connections to the life-threatening challenges people face when they cross “La linea” – the border between Mexico and the US. Occupying the gallery space with the blocking foreign object referred to the brutal and oppressive nature of the wall, which extends far beyond its physicality. One Day Berlin aimed to raise public awareness of the atrocities that occur along the dangerous border. From 2012, the gallerist Christiane Bühling-Schultz and the art historian Dr Karin Rase realised curated exhibitions in Berlin under the label “C&K unterwegs”. From 2014 until 2020 they ran the C&K Galerie in Berlin-Mitte (Joachimstraße). Currently they are active without gallery space. Many years of experience and cooperation with artists are the basis of their work, which is characterised by the notion that art is stimulation, provocation, utopia, emotion and not a vehicle for profit. C&K represents contemporary German and international artists who explore the boundaries of the classical media of painting, sculpture and drawing in an idiosyncratic way. From 1983 to 1990, Volker Diehl was a partner in Folker Skulima’s gallery and represented artists such as Leiko Ikemura, Jaume Plensa, Ray Smith, Rosemarie Trockel and Martin Assig. In 1990 Diehl took over the space at Niebuhrstraße 2 and renamed the gallery Galerie Volker Diehl. The gallery concept is somewhat off the mainstream. It aims at artists with a special individual attitude. From 2000 to 2011, the gallery was located in Zimmerstraße in Berlin-Mitte (until 2007) and in Lindenstraße in the Kreuzberg district. In autumn 2011, Diehl moved back to the former space in Niebuhrstraße in Charlottenburg. In September 2013, “Diehl Cube”, a project space in Emser Straße in Wilmersdorf, was added, in which exhibitions were shown 24/7, like a shop window, until 2018. Galerie ART CRU Berlin is Berlin’s only gallery for so-called Outsider Art since 2008. The term (introduced in 1945 by painter Jean Dubuffet as “Art Brut”) refers to art by people with psychiatric disorders or mental disabilities. We are convinced that the particular perception these artists have allows them to create art of high authenticity. With our exhibitions we present works by “outsiders” as a crucial part of contemporary art and aim to foster discourse within the established art world. Being located at the Kunsthof on Oranienburger Straße in Berlin-Mitte, the gallery presents works by people with disabilities right in the centre of Berlin’s art scene. The Barbara Weiss Gallery was founded in 1992 by Barbara Weiss with its headquarter in Potsdamer Straße. With an intellectually demanding and curatorially progressive approach, the gallery quickly established itself. Equally sensitive to artistic developments and political issues, the gallery has been characterized from its beginnings by a sustained interest in conceptually informed and feminist positions. In 2011, Galerie Barbara Weiss has moved to its current location in Berlin-Kreuzberg. In continuation of its multifaceted and conceptual approach, the gallery has presented solo exhibitions of internationally renowned women artists in recent years. Today the gallery is run by Bärbel Trautwein and Daniel Herleth, a position they have held since 2014. The Gallery Galerie Hilaneh von Kories was opened in Hamburg in 2005 and is based on Belziger Straße in Schöneberg since August 2014. In alternating exhibitions it shows works from the classical spectrum of artistic black-and-white photography and also works of young avantgarde photographers. Among others the works of Dana Gluckstein, Ara Güler, Jim Rakete and Stephan Vanfleteren have been presented. So, in the last years the following photographers were presented: Herbert Dombrowski, Bill Perlmutter, Wolf Suschitzky and in 2011 the first exhibition in Germany of the then totally unknown street photographer Vivian Maier. Inga Kondeyne’s gallery is one of a rare breed of the galleries for drawing in Germany. Since the exhibition “Pencilparty”( 2010 ) to mark the gallery’s 30th anniversary in its rooms in Linienstraße, Berlin-Mitte, positions of drawing have been presented consistently in the gallery at 10 Carmerstraße near Savignyplatz; the non-figurative aspect has also remained at the forefront since then. The gallery represents drawing artists such as Eve Aschheim (USA), Hanns Schimansky, Malte Spohr, Beate Terfloth, Sam Szembek, Bettina Munk, Thomas Gosebruch, Christiane Schlosser, Dorothee Rocke, H.Frank Taffelt among others. However, its work also provides an initial showcase for young positions like Hanna Hennenkemper, Johannes Regin and Kazuki Nakahara with solo exhibitions / fair appearances. Regular group exhibitions enable unusual perspectives and idiosyncratic, reciprocal play between the drawings on show. As an art historian, gallery owner Inga Kondeyne is able to offer expert, illuminating information about contemporary drawing in her texts and commentaries. Since 2015 there has been close cooperation with Gallery Wichtendahl (program emphasis: works on paper) in their jointly used rooms at 10 Carmerstraße. BBA Gallery has been finding and representing artists with exceptional talent and ideas, a strong vision and a convincing style since 2017. Age or education are not the most important criteria for the gallery. It is more interested in authenticity, perseverance, professionalism and outstanding artworks, regardless of the medium. BBA Gallery works with so-called “emerging” and “mid-career” artists. However, for BBA Gallery these are industry terms, labels that help to simplify the complexity. They believe that artists don’t need a label, but a dedicated gallery that opens doors for them, introduces their work to collectors and shares their vision with the world. BBA Gallery grew out of an artist-run project space in 2015. Art Gallery in Berlin: BBA Gallery | Contemporary Art in Berlin | ART at Berlin

Hilleckes Gallery is founded in 2021 by gallery owner and art historian Bettina Hilleckes. Her love of narrative and figurative representation was centred on medieval and baroque painting during her student days and is still reflected in her fascination with contemporary art today. Her many years of experience in the art scene, which she gained as artistic director at Springer & Winckler, as founder and partner of art affairs as well as in important positions at other Berlin galleries, is reflected above all in her closeness and appreciative interaction with her artists. Quality and a trusting collaboration are essential for the gallery owner. In 2021, Bettina Hilleckes’ long-standing wish to open her own gallery has been fulfilled, starting with an exhibition entitled La Forma del Colore by the Italian artist Iginio Iurilli. KLEINERVONWIESE is a cooperation between the curator Constanze Kleiner and the art historian Dr. Stephan von Wiese. They try out new ways within the art market and at the same time act autonomously and exhibit in temporary spaces. This objective enables a social orientation, proximity to the current art scene and changing cooperations with both committed companies and progressive public and non-profit institutions. A broad gallery programme with interactive artistic interventions is directed against the impulse of looking away. Indifferent ignorance and brutality are not tolerated. The fact that killing and destruction are ruthlessly accepted in the worldwide struggle for existence, profit and power and at the same time psychologically suppressed by the media is a colossal, ongoing scandal. It is a mistake to allow art to be completely co-opted into the production of consumer goods. Photo: KLEINERVONWIESE @enter art airshop opas Nr 1 KLEINERVONWIESE connects all kinds of people in its programme: Men and women, children and young people, artists and exhibition makers, exhibition visitors and collectors, insiders and outsiders, employees and entrepreneurs, civil servants and free spirits, young and old. nüüd.berlin was initially founded in 2016 by Henner Merle as “fine art berlin project spaces”. The gallery represents painters, sculptors and photographers and organises exhibitions and supporting programmes. In addition to discovering and promoting talented newcomers, the gallery owner also wants to introduce established artists who have not yet exhibited in Berlin or Germany and make them known nationally as well as internationally. As director and co-founder of the former gallery ZFF – Zentrum für Fotografie in Berlin (1997/98) & co-curator of the exhibition for the successful book BERLIN WONDERLAND by Anke Fesel & Chris Keller (2014), he gained practical experience as a gallery owner and curator. After five years of numerous pop-up exhibitions at ever-changing locations, Henner Merle decided to take the next step and open a permanent space for art exhibitions in Berlin-Mitte in September 2021, despite the difficult pandemic year. With the permanent location and the planning security gained through this, exhibitions with the gallery’s artists and other artists will now be held regularly. In addition, it will now be possible to concretise and realise long-held plans – such as a cooperation with a New York gallery or a German-Indian project. nüüd.berlin gallery is intended to be […]

OFFICE IMPART, founded in April 2018 by Johanna Neuschäffer and Anne Schwanz, is a gallery, but one that extend the standard definition of a gallery. For the world is changing, and so is the way in which art is presented and sold. To be part of this transformative process, the traditional model of the gallery needs to be expanded. And this is precisely what we seek to achieve with OFFICE IMPART. One of the many impacts of the digital age that is key to the presentation of art is a new understanding of space as a multidimensional structure that can be linked in all directions. OFFICE IMPART lives this understanding of space as a flexible, dynamic construct that connects with various partners and presents content that manifests itself in various formats and spaces, digital and real. Q Gallery Berlin opened at the end of November 2018 in Großgörschenstraße in the north of Schöneberg – one of the most historic areas of Berlin. In the 1920s, a large number of publishing houses and galleries were located here. The area was popular with artists and literary figures. Claire Waldoff and Joseph von Eichendorff are just two names of those who lived and worked here. In 1963, Berlin’s first producer’s gallery opened at number 35, and the well-known UFO Club Berlin moved into the street shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Q Gallery Berlin wants to become part of this history. It focuses on contemporary art in the field of tension between European artists from the Orient and the Occident. The European continent stretches from the Caspian Sea across Central Europe to the Strait of Gibraltar in the immediate vicinity of the African continent. This geographical arc is significant as a programmatic spectrum for the Q Gallery’s art education and exhibitions. For The Ballery, it has been the impulse to form a community of artists who have stepped out of the mainstream to follow their own personal path, and whose artistry comes from a keen observation of the world, as well as a strong and wide-ranged background. Because all believe creation, whatever the medium, is deeply rooted in human experiences, the common wish is to lead the viewer to consider new perspectives and stimulate ideas. Around British director Simon Williams, The Ballery has gathered a network of artists coming from all parts of the world. Photography, painting, sculpture, textiles, mixed media, performance art, video or literature, each medium is an equally important part of a more global work. Spandau Citadel is considered one of the most important and best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in Europe. It stands on an area that was already fortified with a stone castle in the Middle Ages. With the development of firearms, the Spandau castle no longer offered protection. So from 1560 to 1594, Brandenburg’s Elector Joachim II had a modern defensive complex built as western protection for the residential city of Berlin-Cölln. The armoury of the citadel houses the Spandau Museum of City History. The permanent exhibition on the ground floor provides an overview of Spandau’s history. More than 300 objects tell of the settlement and development of the Havel town, which has only been part of Berlin since 1920. The highlights of the exhibition include a Hudson Essex in running order and a collection of historic Siemens small electrical appliances, representing the industry that was based here in the 1920s. Film props from the studios once located here or the original recipe book of an old-established baker’s family are also popular with visitors. The cultural institution is supported by the art association “Haus am Lützowplatz – Fördererkreis Kulturzentrum Berlin e.V.”, which was founded in 1960 on the initiative of the then Mayor of Berlin, Willy Brandt. The idea was to preserve the city villa on Lützowplatz, built in 1873, as an art venue. The founding members were personalities from the Berlin SPD, the Berlin cultural scene and the trade unions. KW Institute for Contemporary Art aims to approach the central questions of our times through the production, display, and dissemination of contemporary art. Since its inception, 25 years ago, KW has established itself, not only as an institution, but also as a dynamic and lively space for progressive practices within the Berlin art scene, as well as in an international context. By means of exhibitions and various event formats, KW has aligned itself towards the current tendencies of the national and international art and cultural discourse, and has actively developed them on a collaborative level with artists, institutions, and by means of commissioned works. As an institution for contemporary art without a collection of its own, the team at KW maintains a high degree of flexibility in creating its programs and addressing its audience. Under the responsibility of director Krist Gruijthuijsen, the current program evolves around the central objective of using the participating artists’ perspective as a starting point, entailing their subjects and points of view as ways to reflect on social and political issues. The institution is thereby conceived as a social space that facilitates contemplation and exchange between different protagonists and cultures, consistently challenging its audience. The building […]

Founded in 1969, the neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (nGbK) is one of the most active and largest art associations in Germany. The grassroots democratic structure enables direct influence on exhibitions, interventions, research projects, event series and publications. Members develop and supervise projects in interdisciplinary groups from idea to realisation. The programme is decided by the members, who discuss and select it annually in a collective process. The nGbK has established itself as an innovative centre for contemporary art, influencing generations of curators, artists and cultural professionals. Its exhibition concepts are considered ground-breaking, and it deals with socio-politically relevant issues such as racism, nationalism and urban policy. The examination of (post)migrant, (post)colonialist and gender issues is another focus. Art is understood as a form of action that has an impact on social processes. The active members shape the programme with great personal commitment and carry on the founders’ original idea of a new society. In this manner the several artistic context and ways to work are elucidated and we can intensify the exchange between different positions. Galerie Axel Obiger exclusively shows contemporary work. The Center for Art and Urbanistics (ZK/U) is located in Siemensstraße in Moabit. KUNSTrePUBLIK is the organization behind ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics. The ZK/U strives to develop projects, co-produce knowledge and share values created through exchange. The ZK/U does not offer its scholarship holders fixed ideas and principles. Rather, individual projects and needs shape what could be called continuous education. Rather than allowing the “end product” to restrict the possible paths of a practice, ZK/U focuses on the processes that arise from and flow into the specific contexts of the Fellows’ practice, be they locally defined situations or international discourses. Zwitschermaschine exists since April 2013 and is supported by Kulturpark 3000 e.V. and Second Collective e.V. Zwitschermaschine initiates events in a high density and sequence of events, which partly results in very short running times. The initiators are mainly interested in meeting and exchange, i.e. communication. The main focus of the programme is on public space, urban space and architecture. In a loose sequence, ZM presents artist projects – open workbooks, sketches, draft drawings – which are presented in the form of an exhibition and in which ZM is publicly negotiated. The Kunstverein Ost – KVOST for short – was founded in 2018. It emerged from the gallery koal and is dedicated to the promotion of artists who come from Eastern Europe or whose life and work were influenced by the experience of the former Eastern Bloc. The Kunstverein’s premises in Berlin’s Mitte district, as part of the large-scale urban development project Leipziger Strasse, once designed as a socialist utopia, provide an exciting point of reference. Founded in 2006, the former gallery koal showed young contemporary art that explores the boundaries between media and genres. The gallery focused on sculpture and installation, represented by the works of Yinon Avior, Katinka Pilscheur, Yitzhak Golombek, Dennis Feddersen and Jeanno Gaussi. The Buchstabenmuseum takes on a preserving task for “built letters”. Built letters are disappearing from the cityscape. Globalisation and standardisation are displacing regional, traditional businesses, retail shops and handcrafted lettering. Individually and high-quality designed shop lettering is disappearing from our view and our consciousness – if we do not preserve it. The basis for the huge collection of the Buchstabenmuseum was the private collection of Barbara Dechant, a designer from Vienna. She and her like-minded colleagues have already been able to save hundreds of letters from being scrapped, from disappearing, from being used as decorative objects, salvage them in the Buchstabenmuseum and make them accessible to the public. The Deutsche Kinemathek is one of Europe’s leading institutions dedicated to audiovisual heritage. From 2025, the Kinemathek will move from its previous location at Potsdamer Platz to the E-Werk in Berlin-Mitte, while planning for a new film house continues. The programme will continue in these transitional quarters – with proven formats and new ideas – and will continue to offer exciting insights into film and television culture. Collecting, preserving, cataloguing, presenting and communicating the audiovisual heritage – these have been the tasks of the Deutsche Kinemathek since its opening in 1963. The object is everything that belongs to film and television history: the estate of Marlene Dietrich, the archives of the director Werner Herzog or the television documentarist Georg Stefan Troller as well as important screenplays, including scripts from Carl Mayer to Christian Petzold. The Kinemathek promotes the examination of moving images with a varied educational and event programme. Its archives and specialised library are central points of contact for research and science and remain accessible. The architecture of the building, which was literally in motion (it was dismantled in 1935 and reconstructed a few metres away in a new location for the city’s 750th anniversary celebrations), originates from the Rococo period. The Georg Kolbe Museum shows exhibitions of classical modern and contemporary art and is located in Sensburger Allee, on the S5 in the Berlin district of Westend (Charlottenburg). In 1928/29, the sculptor Georg Kolbe (1877-1947) had the residential and studio house built on the edge of Grunewald, which today houses the Georg Kolbe Museum. The ensemble with the cubic brick buildings is an impressive testimony to New Building in Berlin and is an architectural monument and place of excursions with a nice café. In the garden and in the sculpture courtyard are sculptures by Kolbe from different creative phases. The Dancers’ Fountain from 1922 is an eye-catcher. In addition to the current exhibitions, the collection contains Georg Kolbe’s sculptures and drawings. Among the approximately 200 sculptures, mainly bronzes, are many unique pieces. The collection is expanded by works and historical materials by other sculptors of the first half of the 20th century, such as Ernst Barlach, Rudolf Belling, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Gerhard Marcks and Renée Sintenis. © ART at Berlin: Museums in Berlin: Georg Kolbe Museum Photo: House view, 2016, Photo: Enric Duch, © Bildarchiv Georg Kolbe Museum

The Gipsformerei (Plaster Moulding Shop) of the National Museums in Berlin is the largest institution of its kind in the world. For 200 years, high-quality art replicas from mainly Berlin museums, but also from European museums, have been produced here. As an art manufactory, the Gipsformerei sees its task as treating tradition with respect and creating unique works of art according to traditional production methods, with the most careful handiwork and a wealth of specialist knowledge. Almost 7,000 casts of original works of art from all epochs and world cultures are part of the inventory of this traditional house. In addition to casts of works from the European and Egyptian art epochs, the range also includes objects from Central and South America, Asia and Africa. The oldest piece is the original 25,000-year-old Venus of Willendorf, the largest cast is the 42-metre-high Marcus Aurelius Column from Rome. A unique feature is that the entire mould stock is open to interested buyers to make an art replica. The Jewish Museum Berlin is one of the largest museums in Europe. It is located in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin, near Checkpoint Charlie and the former Berlin Wall. It is most famous for the remarkable architecture of its building, designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, and has quickly become a city landmark. The permanent exhibition shows past and present Jewish history in Germany. It covers five historical chapters, ranging from the beginnings of Jewish life in Germany through the Middle Ages, the emancipation movement of the Renaissance and its failure to the present. National Socialism, the Holocaust and the post-war period occupy an important place. The historical narrative alternates with informative elements about Jewish culture and religion in the world. In addition to objects from the museum’s collections and documents left by families, visitors can also discover art installations, interactive and virtual reality stations and immersive experiences on two floors. The Käthe Kollwitz Museum exhibits a collection of works by the artist Käthe Kollwitz. It was located in Fasanenstraße from 1986 until early summer 2022. The museum is currently closed. From autumn 2022, the museum will once again welcome visitors in its new premises in the theatre building of Charlottenburg Palace. The Käthe Kollwitz Museum was founded in 1986 at Fasanenstraße 24 and is dedicated to the life’s work of one of Germany’s most important artists. Kollwitz achieved worldwide fame and created unique works of art against war and social injustice throughout her life. After 36 years, the museum is now saying goodbye to Fasanenstraße and moving to the prestigious theatre building at Charlottenburg Palace. The three-storey early classicist building was built according to the plans of Carl Gotthard Langhans (1732-1808), the architect of the Brandenburg Gate. In her future place of work, too, the museum’s primary tasks will be to cultivate Käthe Kollwitz’s artistic oeuvre and to convey its significance for the present. From October 2022, the Berlin Kollwitz Collection will initially be presented at Spandauer Damm with a newly designed permanent exhibition on the ground floor of the building. It is expected that special exhibitions will also be […]

Unique masterpieces of interior design from the 16th to the 18th century are presented on three floors. In the Knoblauchhaus Museum you enter the world of Biedermeier. Carefully reconstructed living rooms show how the Knoblauch family lived and ran their business here 200 years ago. In this way, you will vividly get to know the living culture and attitude to life at that time. In the new exhibition area “Berlin Salon”, you can also meet friends of the Knoblauch family, including famous people such as the master builder Karl Friedrich Schinkel and the scholars Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt. The Knoblauch House is one of the few remaining 18th century bourgeois houses in the centre of Berlin. For many years it was a meeting place for family celebrations and a venue for social activities. The restored living quarters are furnished in Biedermeier style and show how Berlin merchants lived in the period between the end of the Napoleonic era and the bourgeois revolution in Germany. The Neue Nationalgalerie shows 20th century visual art from the collection of the Nationalgalerie, which has five other locations: Alte Nationalgalerie, Friedrichswerder Church, Museum Berggruen, Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection and Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin. After almost 50 years of use since its opening in 1968, the Neue Nationalgalerie was extensively renovated and modernised between January 2015 and 2020. It was only sporadically included in cultural events (e.g. Berlin Art Week 2015). The building of the Neue Nationalgalerie is considered an icon of classical modernism. It was the last work of the internationally famous architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. With the museum’s glass Upper Hall, he completed his longstanding preoccupation with flowing, open space. The architect died shortly after the building was inaugurated. Thus, with its steel roof and its reduced formal language, the New National Gallery is at the same time considered the legacy of a visionary 20th-century master builder. It is also worth walking around the only building by the famous German-American architect built in Germany after the Second World War. Since it is close to the Kulturforum, the Philharmonie, Potsdamer Platz and the new gallery district on Potsdamer Strasse, a visit here can be perfectly […]

The Pergamonmuseum is part of the impressive museum island (Museumsinsel). It shows the Antikensammlung, the Vorderasiatische Museum and the Museum für Islamische Kunst. The Pergamon Museum houses the impressive Pergamon Altar and the Ishtar Gate, one of the city gates of Babylon, with the Processional Way of Babylon, the Mshatta Façade and the Market Gate of Miletus. As part of the Museum Island Master Plan, the museum has been renovated in sections since 2013 according to plans by the architectural firm O.M. Ungers. The project is being realised in two construction phases so that part of the museum can always remain open to visitors. In May 2019, the topping-out ceremony for the north wing and the middle wing of the basic renovation and addition to the Pergamon Museum was celebrated on Museum Island Berlin. In the course of the renovation, the hall with the Pergamon Altar will remain closed until at least 2025. The north wing and the Hellenistic Hall are also affected by the closure. The south wing of the Pergamon Museum with the Ishtar Gate, the Processional Way and the Museum of Islamic Art as well as the Hall with the Market Gate of Miletus will remain open. The […]
