Founded in 1696, the Akademie der Künste is one of the oldest cultural institutions in Europe. Since then, she has been significantly influenced by the community of her members. In the early founding years, the emphasis was on teaching and lively exchange among its members. In the decades of the Enlightenment, the Academy distinguished itself as a center of national cultural renewal. Since then, it has gradually adopted its current form of public discussion forum for a wide variety of art and politics. In 2018, the Akademie der Künste is one of the hosts of the 10th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art.
