For thirty years now, Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers have been promoting and supporting the developments of contemporary art. Monika Sprüth opened her gallery in 1983, Philomene Magers made her start in 1991; both were located in Cologne at that time. Their shared enthusiasm for working with diverse artistic positions in the areas of conceptual art, minimalism, feminism, and photography led to a merger of the two galleries in 1998. A second gallery space in Munich followed soon and in 2003 Sprüth Magers opened their gallery in London. Since the move from Cologne and Munich to Berlin in 2008, the gallery has been located in the neighbourhood of Museum Island, on Oranienburger Straße in Berlin-Mitte. For the gallery’s next chapter, the LA gallery opened in 2016.
