Galerie Gisela Capitain, Cologne and Petzel Gallery, New York opened a joint gallery in Berlin in fall 2008. The gallery, a 1.300 square meter glass-encased modernist building preserved from the Socialist Era, is located in one of the city’s historical landmarks in Karl-Marx-Allee, Berlin- Mitte. The “Kunst im Heim” gallery which opened in 1964, as a classical example of East German Modernism, was designed by architects Kaiser and Franek to house a display of fine and applied arts from the countries of the Eastern Bloc in the former GDR.
Since 2008, more than 35 artists have realised ambitious solo exhibitions, developed on-site in the exceptional space, amongst others Karla Black, Wade Guyton, Martin Kippenberger, Maria Lassnig, Robert Longo, Sarah Morris, Monika Sosnowska, John Stezaker, Seth Price, Charline von Heyl and Christopher Williams.
