Benhadj & Djilali Galerie organises exhibitions of contemporary art from various disciplines in gallery spaces in Villa Heike in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen, district Lichtenberg. The gallery is both a commercial gallery and a venue for non-commercial, socially relevant exhibitions and projects that aim for high public and media attention. Gallery owner and curator Yasmine Benhadj-Djilali transformed the Benhadj & Djilali Gallery, then still located on Torstraße in Berlin-Mitte, into a temporary museum from 2018 to 2019 and presented the exhibition ONE DAY | BERLIN there. In it, artist Adrian Sierra Garcia intervened in the way we perceive time and space with an installation occupying the entire gallery space, creating connections to the life-threatening challenges people face when they cross “La linea” – the border between Mexico and the US. Occupying the gallery space with the blocking foreign object referred to the brutal and oppressive nature of the wall, which extends far beyond its physicality. One Day Berlin aimed to raise public awareness of the atrocities that occur along the dangerous border. The programme of the Sandau & Leo Gallery, which opened in September 2017, is characterised by a combination of tradition and renewal. Dr. Doris Leo stands for tradition – that is, for the continuation of formative aspects of the former Leo.Coppi Gallery, founded in 1991 – with her experience in the art trade and in exhibition activities. Doris Leo and Jörg Sandau accept the challenge of supplementing this programme with new positions of equally high quality. In addition to paintings, works on paper, graphics and sculptures, photographic works will also be shown in the future. SEXAUER was founded in October 2013 by Jan-Philipp Sexauer. Apart from solo shows of young international artists the gallery also presented strictly curated group shows in which works of young artists were confronted with established positions such as Roman Signer, Franz Erhard Walther or Alicja Kwade. SEXAUER mainly shows young, emerging, international positions in different media such as painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, and installation. The shows are documented in catalogues and films. Since the large exhibition hall (15 x 15 x 5 meters) can be overseen from any standpoint, SEXAUER attaches great value to a stringent hanging or a consistent exhibition layout which illustrates the references between the different works. It is located on Streustraße Berlin-Weissensee. Photo: Courtesy of Sexauer Gallery Art Gallery in Berlin: Sexauer Gallery | Contemporary Art in Berlin | ART at Berlin

From 2012, the gallerist Christiane Bühling-Schultz and the art historian Dr Karin Rase realised curated exhibitions in Berlin under the label “C&K unterwegs”. From 2014 until 2020 they ran the C&K Galerie in Berlin-Mitte (Joachimstraße). Currently they are active without gallery space. Many years of experience and cooperation with artists are the basis of their work, which is characterised by the notion that art is stimulation, provocation, utopia, emotion and not a vehicle for profit. C&K represents contemporary German and international artists who explore the boundaries of the classical media of painting, sculpture and drawing in an idiosyncratic way. The Barbara Weiss Gallery was founded in 1992 by Barbara Weiss with its headquarter in Potsdamer Straße. With an intellectually demanding and curatorially progressive approach, the gallery quickly established itself. Equally sensitive to artistic developments and political issues, the gallery has been characterized from its beginnings by a sustained interest in conceptually informed and feminist positions. In 2011, Galerie Barbara Weiss has moved to its current location in Berlin-Kreuzberg. In continuation of its multifaceted and conceptual approach, the gallery has presented solo exhibitions of internationally renowned women artists in recent years. Today the gallery is run by Bärbel Trautwein and Daniel Herleth, a position they have held since 2014. When Barbara Weiss passed away in 2016, Bärbel Trautwein and Daniel Herleth continued the gallery’s work, a continuity that emerged from the joint efforts of the past years. Galerie ART CRU Berlin is Berlin’s only gallery for so-called Outsider Art since 2008. The term (introduced in 1945 by painter Jean Dubuffet as “Art Brut”) refers to art by people with psychiatric disorders or mental disabilities. We are convinced that the particular perception these artists have allows them to create art of high authenticity. With our exhibitions we present works by “outsiders” as a crucial part of contemporary art and aim to foster discourse within the established art world. Being located at the Kunsthof on Oranienburger Straße in Berlin-Mitte, the gallery presents works by people with disabilities right in the centre of Berlin’s art scene. It aims at artists with a special individual attitude. From 2000 to 2011, the gallery was located in Zimmerstraße in Berlin-Mitte (until 2007) and in Lindenstraße in the Kreuzberg district. In autumn 2011, Diehl moved back to the former space in Niebuhrstraße in Charlottenburg. In September 2013, “Diehl Cube”, a project space in Emser Straße in Wilmersdorf, was added, in which exhibitions were shown 24/7, like a shop window, until 2018. Galerie Diehl is particularly committed to contemporary art from Eastern European countries. Art Gallery in Berlin: Galerie Diehl | Contemporary Art in Berlin | ART at Berlin

Inga Kondeyne’s gallery is one of a rare breed of the galleries for drawing in Germany. Since the exhibition “Pencilparty”( 2010 ) to mark the gallery’s 30th anniversary in its rooms in Linienstraße, Berlin-Mitte, positions of drawing have been presented consistently in the gallery at 10 Carmerstraße near Savignyplatz; the non-figurative aspect has also remained at the forefront since then. The gallery represents drawing artists such as Eve Aschheim (USA), Hanns Schimansky, Malte Spohr, Beate Terfloth, Sam Szembek, Bettina Munk, Thomas Gosebruch, Christiane Schlosser, Dorothee Rocke, H.Frank Taffelt among others. However, its work also provides an initial showcase for young positions like Hanna Hennenkemper, Johannes Regin and Kazuki Nakahara with solo exhibitions / fair appearances. Regular group exhibitions enable unusual perspectives and idiosyncratic, reciprocal play between the drawings on show. As an art historian, gallery owner Inga Kondeyne is able to offer expert, illuminating information about contemporary drawing in her texts and commentaries. Since 2015 there has been close cooperation with Gallery Wichtendahl (program emphasis: works on paper) in their jointly used rooms at 10 Carmerstraße. The Salongalerie “Die Möwe” (> the Seagull) presents art from the Classical Modern and Post-War (from 1945) areas. Special dedication is given to artists whose work has unjustly disappeared from memory. Indeed, the gallery constantly seeks the traces these artists left behind – those which clearly demonstrate their significance. It cultivates and creates the space where the works of such “forgotten” artists become both visible and tangible. At the turn of the year 2022/2023, the gallery gave up its location in Auguststraße in Berlin. However, the gallery is still active in its cause at various locations. You can find the gallery’s contact details below. Artists: Herbert Behrens-Hangeler, Gottfried Graf, Wolfgang Frankenstein, Erich Franke, Erwin Hahs, Gerhart Hein, Cesar Klein, Ida Kerkovius, Edmund Kesting, Curt Lahs, Fritz Kuhr, Karl Kunz, Jeanne Mammen, Lotte Laserstein, Marg Moll, Georg Meistermann, Albert Mueller, Erna Schmidt-Caroll, Werner Scholz, Richard Ziegler, a.o. “Die Möwe“ adds a further unique accent to the gallery scene, by keeping the Berliner Salon tradition alive; its salon evenings bring art lovers, collectors, critics and living witnesses together and provide insight into the destinies of the artists. Many belonged to the legendary “Sturm-Kreis” which gravitated around Herwarth Walden, the November […]

Since its inception, 25 years ago, KW has established itself, not only as an institution, but also as a dynamic and lively space for progressive practices within the Berlin art scene, as well as in an international context. By means of exhibitions and various event formats, KW has aligned itself towards the current tendencies of the national and international art and cultural discourse, and has actively developed them on a collaborative level with artists, institutions, and by means of commissioned works. As an institution for contemporary art without a collection of its own, the team at KW maintains a high degree of flexibility in creating its programs and addressing its audience. Under the responsibility of director Krist Gruijthuijsen, the current program evolves around the central objective of using the participating artists’ perspective as a starting point, entailing their subjects and points of view as ways to reflect on social and political issues. The institution is thereby conceived as a social space that facilitates contemplation and exchange between different protagonists and cultures, consistently challenging its audience. The building […]
