90 galleries have closed in Berlin since 2015.
Galerie Blain|Southern was based in London, New York and Berlin until the beginning of 2020. We reported on the closure at DEEDS.WORLD. The Berlin branch was located in the former Tagesspiegel print house in the Mercator Höfe on Potsdamer Straße in Berlin-Tiergarten. To the exhibitions of Blain | Southern Berlin Blain|Southern was an established name in the line-up of Berlin’s galleries, impressing not only by the dimensions of its gallery spaces, with an area of 1,300 square meters in the 18-meter high, light-flooded rooms of the former Tagesspiegel printing house on Potsdamer Strasse. But also by the biographies of Graham Southern and Harry Blain, the gallery’s namesakes and founders. Blain founded his first gallery, Blains Fine Art, in 1992 at the age of only 25. Southern had made a name for himself in 1994 at the age of thirty-four as founding director of London’s Christie’s Post-War & Contemporary Art Department. In 2002, Blain and Southern opened the London gallery for contemporary art “Haunch of Venison”, named after their original location, the Haunch of Vanison Yard, which they sold to Christie’s auction house in 2007. Blain is also the founder of “Sedition”, a platform for the sale of digital art, representing […]

Ralf Haensel started 401contemporary in Berlin in March 2009, driven by two motivations; to provide young artists with rooms in which to exhibit, a ‘spatial’ platform, but also to offer them a ‘time’ platform, a possibility to discover a connectedness with other artists across the boundaries of time. This hologram of past and present not only steered young artists on their way forward, it also initiateed new interpretations and provided important stimuli for all parties involved. – At the end of 2010, 401contemporary moved from ‘Berlin-Mitte’ to Potsdamer Straße, one of the most flamboyant art-creating-and-trading areas of the roaring-twenties-Berlin, and today again an epicentre of the Berliner art scene. The last exhibition of 401contemporary took place until January 2019. To the exhibitions. ART@Berlin: Kunst in Berlin 401contemporary – Gallery

In 2004, Tanja Gerken opened galerie gerken in Auguststraße; 2013, after having been successfully established over nine years, the gallery moved to Linienstraße in Berlin-Mitte. At the end of October 2019 Tanja Gerken ended her work as a gallerist. She will work as a curator in the future and the former gallery rooms in Linienstraße will continue to be used for exhibition purposes for the art collection of Museum Schlössle (Baden-Württemberg). The showroom of former galerie gerken extends over two floors: the ground floor is 240 square meters in size and is accessible through a glassed wall corner entrance. The rooms are specifically equipped to suit an art gallery: underfloor heating facilitates an undisturbed observation of the artworks, exchangeable lightning fixtures and a modest interior design makes it possible to present each artist and artistic inclination individually. The main curatorial aim of the galerie gerken was an equal mix of contemporary paintings, sculptures and installations and trying to find a balanced ratio between more classical genres and new mediums. Young, new positions and already established artists were equally present in the exhibition’s program. The combination of young artists with established position allowed a complex dialog, which gave information […]

For over twenty-five years, Galerie Isabella Czarnowska has played an important role in introducing exceptional contemporary artists to the Western European public. In the early days of the gallery, which was founded as Galerie Isabella Kacprzak in Stuttgart in 1986 and relocated to Cologne in 1989, comprehensive monographic exhibitions featured American artists virtually unknown in Europe at the time: Allan McCollum, Louise Lawler and Richard Prince were among those presented here at an early stage in their careers. In Cologne, two outstanding painters joined the group of artists represented by the gallery – the native South African Marlene Dumas and Luc Tuymans of Belgium. The Polish sculptor Miroslaw Balka also had his first exhibition in Germany at the gallery in 1991. In the mid 1990s, following the significant shift in the geopolitical situation in Central Europe, the gallery moved to Berlin. Among the many solo and group exhibitions held here since then, in 2007, 2009 and 2013, three major exhibitions focussed on the work of the forgotten Polish sculptor Alina Szapocznikow. While continuing to work with established international artists, Galerie Isabella Czarnowska also places great emphasis on fostering the careers of young and emerging talents. Supportico Lopez was born in Naples in 2003, its main characteristic that of being the project of two artists and a curator who decided to open a room of their flat to public exhibitions featuring international artists. The project continued to be ran throughout the years by Gigiotto Del Vecchio – one of the founders – together with Stefania Palumbo, as a curatorial space for the diffusion of contemporary art. Such venture borrowed its name from the street in which it was located, within one of the oldest and most characteristic, as well as most contradictory, districts of Naples: “la Sanità”. In 2008, Supportico Lopez decided to start a new life, moving to Berlin. Initially from the space in Graefestrasse 9 in Kreuzberg and then, since September 2012, within the gallery located in Kurfürstenstrasse 14/b, Schöneberg, the aim is that of being a gallery in which the curatorial attitude is a peculiarity and a distinguishing trait. Klassenfeind Gallery unfortunately has been closed in Spring 2017. It has opened its doors for the first time in June 2015. A gallery that was different to all the others, that wanted to revive the art and subculture of Berlin, espacially the spirit of the legendary Kunsthaus Tacheles. A place where people could collect experiences, not objects. Therefore, to the gallery it was important, that visitors can have fun with the art, meet the artists and speak with them, and that they can bring home unique art from Berlin for an affordable price. For that reason they wanted to continue with the philosophy of Tacheles: “art from and for all”. ART at Berlin: Art Gallery in Berlin Klassenfeind Gallery

LORIS (since 2007) is a project by 11 artists from Berlin. Photography, video, and installation form the methodological interface of the participating artists. Topics like urbanity and naturalness, constructions of identity versus the collective social body, processes of memory and knowledge indicate the diversity with regards to content. In spite of the heterogenity of approaches the artists are united by their effort to critically capture and transform reality and to experiment at the borders of the respective media. Thus with Loris a platform has developed that allows the artists to act freely and work at visual, but also societal, political, and social implementations of artistic questions. Linienstraße in Berlin’s Mitte district was built in 1705 as circumvallation, a temporary wall to shield the city between Oranienburger Straße and Große Frankfurt Straße, today’s Karl-Marx-Allee. Generally known among contemporaries as ‘Linie’ the street was eventually renamed Linienstraße in 1821. SILLER contemporary (former Kunstraum Linie) is a testament to that historic boundary separating and connecting past and present spaces. In the old foundry, the boundaries between the art space and contemporary art flowed anew, whether sculpture with printing technology (Martin Werthmann) or 3D photography with object art (Andrei Loginov). Bergen Assembly 2016 was the second chapter of this investigation. As part of the Bergen Assembly 2016, PRAXES expanded and tested its modular methodology against the framework of the biennial model. Episodically inhabiting different venues throughout Bergen, PRAXES initiated a year-long material discussion centering on two unassociated artistic practices: Lynda Benglis and Marvin Gaye Chetwynd.
