Andy Hope 1930 | SECOND ECHO | Galerie Guido W. Baudach | 11.09.-24.10.2026

until 24.10. | #5162ARTatBerlin | Galerie Guido W. Baudach shows from Friday,11. September 2026 (Vernissage: 10.09.) the exhibition SECOND ECHO by the artist Andy Hope 1930.

A large matte-black oval – a sequel to the two Roswell Saucers (1997) – shines like an icon from the upper corner along the diagonal axis of the room (Time Machine, 2017). In the third and final room of the gallery – just one step up from the second room, yet light-years away – the works coalesce into a gravitational field. Patterns like particles, quantum formations, distortions, clumps, and black holes form a cohesive structure.

SECOND ECHO, named after a series of paintings that has appeared intermittently since 2010, brings together works spanning roughly 30 years. Although some were created independently of one another, they are underpinned by shared ideas – such as Suprematism and science fiction. As early as my first exhibition at Galerie Guido W. Baudach – then still located in the Maschenmode space (4. – 22. September 2001) – black sails appeared in some works, evoking the language of Constructivism. This practice continues to this day – for example, in Myth of the Near Future I and II (2017) or in the sculpture Area of Approximate Time (2017).

The black lines and arrangements in Second Echo X (2026) follow a grammar of empty space; they describe movement – or perhaps pressure waves – and are capable of moving silently through empty space.

The often thickly applied surfaces of the Untitled Sequences (2026) appear massive, not to say rich in mass. The compositions – sprayed with light-colored paint onto canvas or canvas board – follow partly scientific models and partly intuitive shortcuts. Other references include the minimalist painting of the 1960s. The picture is as follows: The sprayed dots create a blurred space that comes back into focus at the edges of the paintings, similar to a rangefinder.

#believe – A Space Philosophy VI (2018) and Caravan (2020) are related in their space magic. Cosmic events intertwine with hybrid life forms that slowly drift out of the pictorial space toward an unknown destination.

Andy Hope 1930

Galerie Guido W. Baudach presents the exhibition SECOND ECHO by Andy Hope 1930 as part of this year’s Berlin Art Week. SECOND ECHO is the artist’s ninth solo exhibition with the gallery. The first, Down the Hollywood Line, took place exactly 25 years ago in September 2001 and was also the first exhibition of the former Maschenmode project space as a commercial gallery under its new name. SECOND ECHO thus marks a double anniversary: 25 years of collaboration between artist and gallery, and 25 years of Galerie Guido W. Baudach.

Vernissage: Thursday, 10. September 2026, at 6 pm

Exhibition period: Friday, 11. September until Saturday, 24. October 2026
