until 16.01. | #5183ARTatBerlin | Galerie Schindler shows from Saturday, 14. November 2026 in its new location in the Villa von Kleist the exhibition DOPE by the artist Constantin Schroeder.
“Dope” is used in hip-hop slang to express enthusiasm or approval for something that is perceived as impressive. However, in his paintings, Constantin Schroeder does not simply depict a hip-hop world; in his mostly large-format and predominantly photorealistic works, Schroeder enters an unreal world that seeks to probe the depths of the unconscious and expand the realm of experience—limited by human logic—to include the fantastic and the absurd. He delves deep into the human psyche, expands the viewers’ consciousness and perception of reality, and attempts to subvert visual conventions.

In his work, Schroeder primarily explores the theme of the passage of time. How can we stop time? In addition to precisely measurable time, which progresses linearly, there is a subjective perception of time. Schroeder’s paintings aim to convey a state of mindfulness in which a person can experience the state of their environment, their body, and their mind without distraction: pausing, observing, becoming aware—now they can stop time. In his current hip-hop series “Cypher,” Schroeder illustrates this message once again. His hip-hop dancers are fully immersed in the present moment—whether in motion, in time with the beat of their music, suspended in mid-air, or focused and awaiting their cue.

What interests Schroeder is the depiction of a particular state of perception and consciousness—the contemplation of the present moment—and his aim is to find stability within it. When a body is at rest, the mind also calms down—a foundation for stability and balance.

Schroeder’s figures always stand alone, as it were, in the rain. Individual white drops stand out against the dark, flowing background—they symbolize the passage of time. Everything flows, everything moves on, nothing lasts—that is an experience people must come to terms with. But Schroeder’s heroes stand, float, or linger in the face of the falling drops and the flow, completely stable and in harmony, in balance, in contemplation; they perceive the present moment, observe it—and actually hold it still. – That’s dope!
