“Art does not reproduce the visible, but makes visible.”
Paul Klee
These words by Paul Klee seem to be written especially for the sculptor Hans Scheib, who was born in Potsdam in 1949. “As long as I can think back, I have dreamed of becoming an artist,” says this great, much honored wood sculptor of himself, who has always consistently refused to accept any fashionable or political trend in his free thinking.

Hans Scheib, Die Welle (The Wave)

With a chainsaw and chisel – sometimes in bronze – he creates figures of striking immediacy, interpreting the world in an honest, humorous and even unmistakably personal language. His timeless figures, often borrowed from mythology, tell of longing, loneliness, fragility, sexual hunger, humour and tragedy. Far from the aesthetics of beautiful appearance, he bases his work on the tradition of expressive formal language, which is rooted in the deliberate reflection of the coloured wooden sculpture of the Brücke Expressionists. Scheib’s creatures reflect the general human. They address us in a lively and profound way, touching us with their often wide open eyes, twisted thin legs and angular upper bodies, robust and fragile at the same time. In addition to his sculptures, he also created a large graphic oeuvre.

“He is interested in his very personal message. His figures live from the dramaturgical gesture, from the emotional condensation in the interplay of form and colour. The sculptural is a sensual, meaningful pleasure between shock and beauty,” as Ingeborg Ruthe once described it in the Berliner Zeitung.

“I never knew what I was going to do tomorrow,” he says. “When I came to West Berlin, nobody did work like me. I have always taken the step into the unknown, to the blue horizon of unexpected possibilities.
