until 27.02. | #5186ARTatBerlin | Robert Morat Galerie shows from Friday, 30. October 2026 (Opening: 29.10.) the exhibition “SUN DOG“ by the artist Ezio D’Agostino.

Trained as an archaeologist before turning to photography, D’Agostino interrogates one of the most expensive engineering experiments in human history at ITER, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, about an hour’s drive North of Marseille. Scientists from 35 nations work here on an ambitious project: To solve all global energy problems once and for all, by replicating a process that naturally occurs on the sun. The experiment’s premise is ‘the Holy Grail for parts of the scientific community,’ explains Ezio D’Agostino. The artist, who lives nearby in Aix-en-Provence, has been photographing the reactor since 2019.

In SUN DOG, Ezio D’Agostino constructs a visual archaeology of a future still in the making. Photography becomes both subject and experiment: a medium pushed to its physical limits. Between scientific inquiry, technological utopia and ancient solar imaginaries, the project questions how images shape our understanding of progress, power and the non-visible. As George King asks in his review of the work for The British Journal of Photography: ‘Might ITER become another case of Icarus flying too close to the sun? In D’Agostino’s reflections, an acknowledgement of human hubris is inevitable.’
