until 14.05. | #3454ARTatBerlin | Galerie feinart berlin presents since 7. April 2022 the exhibition Utopie und Reflektion by the artists Willi Sitte und Ulrich Reimkasten at Galerie Beyond.Reality (Schlüterstraße 70, Berlin-Charlottenburg).

As a guest at Galerie Beyond.Reality, feinart berlin is showing early drawings and inks by Ulrich Reimkasten next to colored zinkographs by Willi Sitte. Both positions mark the crossroads of two East German generations of artists.

The “Hommages to the Masters” are a series of prints that Willi Sitte (1921-2013) produced in the last decade before and in the years after the collapse of the GDR, each dedicated to an artist from the vast period between Renaissance and Modern Art.

What is Sitte doing in these colored zincographs, which are full of symbols and partly executed in the manner of the old masters? Is it a throwback to his early idols? Or a disillusioned confrontation with the guard rails of socialist realism, after the expectation of salvation from the achievement of communism that Khrushchev promised in 1961 for the year 1980 had long since turned out to be an unattainable utopia?

Prof. em. Ulrich Reimkasten (*1953) belonged to the inner circle of students around Willi Sitte at Burg Giebichenstein, University of Art Halle, between 1975 and 1985, and was later a professor in painting and textile design there. As a representative of a new generation of artists, depicting socialist utopias was not an option for Reimkasten. Instead, his paintings reflect oriental, Central American or Paleolithic motifs.
