His latest series of works, entitled Physical Dialectics, was produced in the Ruhr region, Germany’s former coal and steel centre. For the series, Leinkauf gained access to the colossal architecture of the former and contemporary industry, cultural buildings and residential complexes and became an observer of a multi-layered juxtaposition of human labour over the last 100 years hidden vertically from deep underground to high up behind the modern glass and steel facades of post-industrial employment sectors. The connecting element is a figure seen from the back, less a romantic reference to the “Wanderer above the Sea of Fog” and more to the “Angel of History”, described by Walter Benjamin as one driven by the storm of the future looking back onto what happened in the past. In film, this contraction of space and time is called the vertigo effect. And in Leinkauf’s work, there is a constriction and compaction of space and times, a focus on what is called structural transformation in this region. The man looking down over the plain can be seen as the focal point for the questions that arise in this context: the relationship between humans and work, humans and architecture, the term landscape and how it relates to nature, and how society manifests itself as living space.
