It had been planned that artist JR’s large-scale temporary installation “La Caverne du Pont Neuf” would be on display in the heart of Paris from 6 to 28 June 2026. This has now been delayed, according to reports from several media outlets, including Tagesschau and Spiegel. Shortly before the planned opening on Saturday, the installation was damaged by strong winds during a thunderstorm. These winds apparently tore away sections of the tarpaulin, printed with rock motifs, from the inflatable structure. Technicians are now working on repairs. A new opening date is yet to be announced. The installation is a tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s “The Pont Neuf Wrapped”, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2025. “La Caverne du Pont Neuf” is a special, limited-time opportunity for Parisians and visitors to experience a reinterpretation of the French capital’s oldest bridge.
Inspired by the quarries from which the bridge’s stone was originally extracted, the work highlights the material origins of Parisian architecture, creating a dialogue between nature and urban refinement, past and present.
