until 08.10. | #3572ARTatBerlin | Crone Berlin presents from 3rd September 2022 the exhibition „Deflections“ by the austrian artist Stefan Reiterer.

In structural engineering, deflection is the extent to which a part of a structural element warps under a specific load. If one looks at Stefan Reiterer’s artistic work, one could assume that it embodies a similar range and flexibly meets the “load” of his chosen medium: painting.

Reiterer does not leave it at the classic, two-dimensional image because, in his eyes, it no longer exists. He creates fascinating entities that expand into space, oscillating between abstract form and blurred landscape. Again and again, similar image fragments appear, which are varied in the most diverse forms and aggregate states. One finds fogged structures, markings, and detailed aerial and satellite photographs, which Reiterer distorts digitally, prints out, paints, distorts again, paints again, and finally transfers to large wooden panels cut to the respective form.

Through this mode of production, the motifs experience the ultimate transformation process: arbitrarily stretchable, rotatable, and distortable, they enter a fluid state in which different image references morph into one another and become a digital fabric completely independent of time and place. Consequently, Reiterer positions his painting-objects in an expansive backdrop of painted fabric panels that, in reference to the exhibition’s title, curves across the floor of the gallery space like a deflection.

The exhibition is accompanied by a collaboration with Canadian artist Jeremy Bailey: Using virtual reality, he sends avatars of renowned artists through the gallery space and lets them interact with Reiterer’s work.
