until 14.11. | #2851ARTatBerlin | Persons Projects presents the exhibition “Time Is No Longer Around” by the artist Santeri Tuori from September 11, 2020.

Persons Projects is delighted to present Santeri Tuori‘s solo exhibition Time is No Longer Round, opening on Friday, 11 of September 2020, on the occasion of the Berlin Art Week. The show will also be part of the European Month of Photography (EMOP) Berlin.

Santeri Tuori uses a camera to engage with the properties of nature and its power of change over the past two decades. Forests, skies, lilies, and wind are only some of the basic elements you might find in any Nordic landscape, and all become items of Tuori’s interest and observation. How should we value these essential features that make up the northern scenery is the fundamental question that lies behind Tuori’s work and his fascination with the passage of time.

To fully comprehend his approach is to begin by seeing how he integrates his life into his projects. An avid sailor, Tuori tours the Finnish Archipelago each summer, searching for new locations to begin and follow his measured cyclical observations. The small island of Kökar outside of Åland has been his primary place of interest.

After finding a specific location, he photographs it from the same position, season after season, over many years. He then layers the images one on top of the other, sometimes superimposing a black-and-white negative with the colored ones to create his own unique compositions of “time being.”

The moving images in the Forest series combine black and white photographs with color video. The superimposing is done either by projecting the video on a photograph or with the help of an editing program, resulting in a layered image, which contains the sharpness and richness of a photograph and the movement and time of a video.

Tuori’s time-based works become visual portals that encapsulate nature’s metamorphosis from one frame to another, rendering the photogenic quality more graphic, like a color pencil drawing. His subjects have their roots in traditional landscape painting and drawing, as seen in the watercolors of William Turner or the biblical paintings of El Greco.

The exhibition Time Is No Longer Round will be accompanied by the book by Santeri Tuori: Time Is No Longer Round, Hatje Cantz, 2020.

Soft opening: Friday, September 11, 2020, 12 – 20 p.m.

Exhibition dates: Friday, September 11, 2020 – Saturday, November 14, 2020
