until 21.03. | #5009ARTatBerlin | Galerie Schwind shows from Saturday, 31 January 2026 the exhibition „Triegel trifft Cranach“ by the artist Michael Triegel.
From January 31 to March 21, 2026, Galerie Schwind in Berlin will present the latest paintings and parchment works by Michael Triegel, one of the most prominent representatives of the New Leipzig School—known for his Old Master-style visual language and his contemporary interpretation of religious and mythological themes.
The focus is on the painting *Doxa*, in which Triegel explores the question of God’s glory and its sensory manifestation in the world. The title “Doxa” refers to the Greek term for “splendor,” “glory,” or “majesty.” Triegel thus draws on the idea that
the divine is hinted at in the visible, in the “appearance of things”—a thought that Goethe expressed in Faust II with the line “In the colorful reflection we have life.” In the pictorial composition, the viewer encounters a complex interweaving of figures, symbols, and allusions: A central role is played by the Psychopompos, the Greek guide of souls: Yet it is not the figure in the ceremonial robe who leads, but an unassuming sparrow, which, as Hermes’s representative, accompanies the wounded wings of the souls, thus condensing the motif of guidance into a quiet, almost humble image.

The paintings are flanked by still lifes on parchment, in which Michael Triegel continues his exploration of appearance, materiality, and transcendence in a concentrated form. The delicate, translucent texture of the parchment lends the motifs an almost incorporeal presence and underscores the tension between material reality and the spiritual dimension. Triegel’s precise, old-master-like painting style renders objects such as fruits and flowers with the utmost sensual concreteness, thereby opening our eyes to that which eludes direct grasp: the invisible, which appears in the delicate light, in reflections and shadows, in the “colored glow” of things.
Parallel to the exhibition, the film “Triegel Meets Cranach,” about the creation of the Naumburg Altar, will celebrate its premiere: Director Paul Smaczny accompanied Michael Triegel for several years during the creation of the much-discussed Naumburg Altar, which is currently located in the Vatican. Immediately following the exhibition opening at Galerie Schwind, the film’s premiere will take place at the Filmtheater am Friedrichshain. The official theatrical release is February 5.
