until 29.06. | #2476ARTatBerlin | Galerie ART CRU Berlin shows from 24th May 2019 the exhibition with works by the artist Melanie Woste.

ART CRU Berlin shows objects made of cardboard by Melanie Woste (born 1983, Münster), next to pictures and collages.

In her first solo exhibition in Berlin, the Lippstadt-based Aktion-Kunst prizewinner and member of the artists’ group DAS ROTE ZEBRA is devoting herself to technical objects of daily use and interiors from the 1970s. The artist’s cardboard objects are complemented by collages of newspaper, such as a cassette recorder, which she creates by layering the smallest snippets of letters with captivating detail, and drawings/paintings, such as a small series of old cameras, which she has transformed into captivatingly elegant precision in watercolor and ink.

In her nostalgic works, Melanie Woste reproduces disused sound and communication media such as televisions, radios or record players on a scale of 1:1 and uses nothing other than packaging material that is also disused: old cardboard boxes. A transformation that she carries out with incredible meticulousness and precision.

She carefully translates the different surface structures, detail by detail, into a single material used in a wide variety of ways – cut, torn, smooth, embossed, woven. The objects remain in their fragile perfection in dumb functionlessness, are silent witnesses, and almost monuments of an era of technical pre-digital everyday consumption. The longing, enlightening immersion builds a bridge between past and future, creating a sense of identity and self-continuity.

In addition, she takes part in all summer academies, which have been run annually by the Aktion-Kunst-Stiftung since 2014. In 2015 she won the Audience Award of the Aktion-Kunst-Preis, which is awarded every three years.
