bis 12.11. | #3599ARTatBerlin | RASCHE RIPKEN presents from 9. September 2022 the group exhibition “In So Fern” by the artists Zora Janković, Herbert Lammers and Walther Schwiete.

The exhibition IN SO FERN brings together three artistic positions from the genres of architecture, still life and landscape. They clearly differ in medium and material, but pose questions – in their individual ways – about the pictorial effect and spatial relations of various objects.

Zora Janković constructs architectural formations as sculpture and relief. Made out of concrete and steel, they do not follow any real buildings. Even though her works are not models in the proper sense, their rough shape is always reminiscent of monuments in the international style of Brutalism: Cast as a whole, the complex structures show manifold traces, which are mainly due to the panels of formwork – and are further enhanced by light, shadow and a varied interplay of different white and grey values.

Herbert Lammers’ painting is influenced by photography, whereby he makes use of the specific qualities of this medium: Using the glazing technique, he paints individual objects of everyday use, including vases and other vessels, which are repeatedly defined by blurring and shifts in colour. The space surrounding them is laid out just as simply, so that his paintings develop a life of their own, that lies outside the natural appearance of the objects. In the constant change of scale and perspective, they have an equally fleeting and lasting effect.

For a long time, Walther Schwiete has been trying out his own invented procedures in objects and installations, which are based on physical pro-cesses – and produce a surprising pictorial quality in the result. This applies once again to his so-called brandings, in which traces of fire and smoke on the surface of the wooden panels create self-dynamic structures of spacial effect – most recently in an series that is apparently dominated by dramatic cloud formations, by light and weather phenomena.
