until 24.09. | #3575ARTatBerlin | Galerie Kremers presents from 2. September 2022 the exhibition Chamber of Wonder – Fiona Ackerman visits Friedrich Meckseper by the artist Fiona Ackerman.

In her project of special artist portraits, based on Foucault’s concept of heterotopia, Canadian artist Fiona Ackerman visited the studio of the artist Friedrich Meckseper, who died in 2019. This resulted in a series of clever and profound portraits and studio studies that characterize the artist as an order- and technology-loving dreamer and collector. We show Ackerman´s paintings together with some masterful works by Friedrich Mecksepeper.

The Player, 2013, Oil on canvas, 80 x 300 cm

“I visited Friedrich Meckseper’s studio in Berlin in the summer of 2012. After documenting his carefully ordered print and painting studios, I was invited into his home to take a look at the many shelves and cupboards filled with antique trinkets and novelties he had accumulated over the course of his life. These objects, extracted by the artist from their places of discovery, stand side by side on the shelves, often grouped by type, but also somehow isolated. Each object tells a story, has a history. I recognise many objects from his paintings, where they have been placed in a new context, given a new, timeless purpose. My approach to Meckseper’s studio is a response to his practice and his personal sense of order. If Meckseper’s order is subject to the notion of isolation and classification, my order in the paintings follows the notion of i tegration and putting things in relation to each other. Where Meckseper orders the objects in space, I try to order them as space. Where there is order, there is rhythm. While the paintings in this exhibition respond to Meckseper’s sense of order, it is this rhythm that resonates in the silence between our paintings.”
