until 02.10. | #2828ARTatBerlin | CAMERA WORK presents the exhibition “15 YEARS – COLLECTED DREAMS” with photographs by artist David Drebin from September 5, 2020.
The exhibition takes place on the occasion of the artist’s 50th birthday and comprises more than 15 large-format photographs, including rarely exhibited major works such as “Movie Star” and “Dreams of Central Park”, new works and spectacular lightboxes. The photo book “Collectors Edition” (teNeues) will be published on the occasion of the exhibition.
David Drebin has been represented by the CAMERA WORK gallery for 15 years. During this time he has developed into an influential and important contemporary photographic artist. In the exhibition, which traces Drebin’s artistic development over the last 15 years by means of selected major works, visitors can gain an insight into the artist’s oeuvre.
David Drebin’s leitmotif is the depiction of women in connection with longings, fantasies and their relationship to the big city. In the photographs, the women are surrounded by an exciting and stimulating atmosphere that is unapproachable, unreachable and at the same time irresistible. Becoming a voyeur, the viewer enjoys a view into apartments and city scenes in which glamorous women are mysteriously staged. Drebin lets the viewer share in the women’s longings, dreams and hopes. Thus the artist succeeds in sceneries full of touching intimacy and closeness, combining humor, love, eroticism, loneliness and melancholy.
David Drebin’s cinematic visual language is also reflected in his epochal panoramas. From New York and Los Angeles to Paris, London and Hong Kong: the metropolitan panoramas, in their format a homage to Hollywood cinema, together with the imposing jungle of houses form an almost infinite projection surface for the variety of seductions and the loneliness of the individual in dealing with his thoughts and desires. The viewer can also experience modern sublimity in the form of the big city.
David Drebin (born 1970) spent his childhood in Toronto before moving to New York to study at Parsons The New School for Design. After graduating in 1996, he quickly gained a high reputation as an international advertising and fashion photographer. David Drebin had his first solo exhibition at CAMERA WORK in 2005. A selection of his pictures appeared in the monograph “Love And Other Stories” in 2007, followed by the illustrated books “The Morning After” (2010), “Beautiful Disasters” (2012), “Chasing Paradise” (2015), “Dreamscapes” (2016), “Love & Lights” (2017), “Before They Were Famous” (2019) and “Collectors Edition” (2020) published by teNeues. Today David Drebin, with his well-known visual language, is one of the most influential artists in the field of contemporary photography. On the international photo art market, his works are sold at exhibitions, art fairs and auctions at prices of up to 100.000 €. The artist lives in New York.
The Berlin-based gallery CAMERA WORK was founded in 1997 and is now one of the world’s leading galleries for photographic art. Based on the historically influenced gallery name, the company has followed the philosophy from the very beginning to represent and show in exhibitions young contemporary artists as well as the most famous artists in the history of photography such as Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Patrick Demarchelier, Peter Lindbergh, Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, Man Ray, Herb Ritts and Albert Watson, in order to manifest the position of photo art as an independent genre within the fine arts and to give space to new positions. CAMERA WORK exclusively represents numerous renowned contemporary artists in Germany, Europe or worldwide, including Nick Brandt, David Drebin, Jean-Baptiste Huynh, Russell James, Eugenio Recuenco, Martin Schoeller, Christian Tagliavini and Ellen von Unwerth. In order to establish a selection of contemporary artists on the art market and to include them in CAMERA WORK’s portfolio, CAMERA WORK ran the art gallery CWC GALLERY in Berlin from 2012 to 2019. CAMERA WORK is regularly represented at leading international art fairs, including Paris Photo, Zona Maco in Mexico City, Art Central Hong Kong and Photo London. Founded in 2001, CAMERA WORK AG owns one of the world’s most comprehensive and qualitatively significant collections of privately owned photographic art, with numerous vintage works by the most renowned photographic artists from the 19th century to the present.
