until 30.08. | #4726ARTatBerlin | Galerie Schindler shows from 03. July the exhibition “Loose Threads, Holding Us” the artist Anna-Lisa Unkuri.

A recurring theme in Anna-Lisa Unkuri’s work is the balance between reality and unreality, both on an atmospheric and figurative level.

Loose threads that hang on us and either keep us from diving into a fantasy realm, perhaps into oblivion and freedom, or keep us in reality, characterised by reason and the desire to do the right thing.

For Anna-Lisa Unkuri, these threads symbolise the ambivalence of our lives: is it about growing up or about the uncertainty of how to actually grow up? Or perhaps it’s about not wanting to grow up at all.

The protagonists in her pictures are often in a state of complete presence. They are unaware of a possible observer and exist in an isolated, independent moment. These works are the result of an approach that is typical of Anna-Lisa Unkuri: She seeks to explore the subject through the use of colour and composition.

Unkuri usually begins her work abstractly and intuitively. Some of the paintings are finished in their expression as abstract works, others she paints with an idea at the beginning or, more often, the idea arises during the process and she then continues to work with additional layers. In this way, she develops a narrative, something figurative.

The creative process itself is therefore a driving force for Anna-Lisa Unkuri. She searches for themes, remains open to surprises and does not just want to work abstractly or figuratively. For her, playfulness is an essential part of her work. By starting with rough, expressive abstract elements, she can gradually add figurative and narrative components to merge everything into a harmonious composition.

Many of her figurative motifs come from personal stories – from photo albums and snapshots of her family. She reinterprets symbols, transforms black and white images into colourful works and gives new meaning to past events. The aim is to express the human experience and our consciousness by mixing reality with a dreamlike, imaginary world. The overlay of colour creates an emotional tapestry that reflects themes such as hidden facets of identity and the fleeting, formative moments of childhood.

Nature is an important source of inspiration for Anna-Lisa Unkuri. It serves her both as a place of refuge and confrontation. Nature offers space for self-discovery, but can also evoke humility and trigger insecurities. In her art, nature often appears not as a concrete landscape, but as a symbolic or emotional environment – a place where security and threat exist side by side.

Opening: Thursday, 03. July, 7 pm.

Exhibition dates: Thursday 03. July – Saturday, 30. August 2025
