Joan Hernández Pijuan (1931-2005 Barcelona) had his first museum exhibition in Mataró in 1955, curated by Santos Torroella, one of Spain’s leading art critics. Participated in the 1960 and 1970 Venice Biennales. 1989 Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona. Major presentation in the Spanish Pavilion at the World Exhibition in Seville in 1992. 1993 Exhibition at the Museo Nacional Reina Sofía in Madrid. 2003 Retrospective in several European museums, starting at the Museu d’Art Contemporani in Barcelona.

Consolidation of his position as one of the most important Spanish artists of the second half of the 20th century. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, acquire works. 2005, the year of the artist’s death, special presentation with Agnes Martin at the 51st Venice Biennale.

2007 Gallery catalogue on Hernández Pijuan. It contains, among other things, the German version of an essay by the American philosopher and art theorist Arthur C. Danto, who emphasises the importance of Hernández Pijuan against the background of American painting. A further publication with an extensive biography will follow in 2014.
