The group exhibition brings together artistic works from Anna Ehrenstein’s class at the HGB Leipzig, which draw on queer, decolonial and power-critical perspectives and explicitly engage with the production, denial and displacement of visibility. The starting point is the assumption that recognition within hegemonic cultural systems is not neutral, but is bound to normative expectations of legibility, identity and representation. The exhibition brings together the class’s diverse works, ranging from photography and performance to video installation and sculpture.
According to a recent theory put forward by neuroscientists David Eagleman and Don Vaughn, dreams play a crucial role in maintaining brain function during sleep. This biological defence mechanism is therefore thought to play a crucial role in preserving human eyesight as well.
Dreams thus provide a space for recontextualisation, fusion and revaluation. The speculative elements of the works on display challenge fixed attributions by fragmenting them: the play on ambiguity and situational interpretability opens up levels for decolonial world-building, in which normative and exoticising regimes of gaze are undermined. Through provocative visual imagery, the materialist conditions of identity production are explored. The juxtaposition of state policies of control and fluid identity opens up a complex discursive space in which tensions are explored.
