The Presence of Absence

Drawings

In the ancient „invention of the art of drawing“ a farewell scene between young lovers is described. At the moment of parting the daughter of the pottery maker Dibutades discovers her lover´s shadow on the wall and traces the outline of this shadow. According to Plinius the art of drawing originated in fixing that which like a shadow was already absent. One source of artistic creation, be it writing or drawing, is in the discrepancy between seeing and not seeing – the presence of absence.

The drawing is in the center of my artistic work. In drawing I explore the possibilities of closing the gaps in the linguistic and concrete presentations. I am pursuing the question of how the seeing and drawing as such can be made visible. Drawing is a fleeting, dithering and latent action often along  a hesitating, taut or glimmering line, groping toward the Not Yet.

Presented here are drawings from the work series Poetry of a loosely tied knot and This This.
