until 24.09. | #3586ARTatBerlin | lorch + seidel contemporary presents from 1. September 2022 (artist reception: 09.09.) the exhibitions “The Secret of the Secret” by the artist Wilken Skurk. The exhibition is presented in the premises of aquabitArt in Auguststraße.
Like the tentacles of a sea anemone underwater, two misshapen arms writhe in the airspace. In search of one another, they fail to make contact. At their ends are cubic forms in cast glass, their surfaces slightly concave or curved, their corners and edges gently rounded. The glass appears supple, pleasing to the touch. The two cubes seem to gaze at one another, like two faces. With air pockets in their heads. The viewpoint of the one seems higher than that of the other. Is it a question of dominance, or of convergence? Like the elusive arms, the geometrically beveled base consists of mirrored steel. In its reflected image, their relationship is continually repeated.

Comparable with glass casting, paint and varnish are applied in layers to the images, one layer after the next, or instead allowed to flow into one another, to some extent mixed using a paintbrush, to some extent reworked with oil pastels. The work’s titles suggest that these abstract painting seek to capture the sensation of a single moment: a negative test result, a danger survived through good fortune, or simply a return to work after lunch break. Emotional snapshots which – according to the artist – thematize the inner worlds of his sculptures.
