until 07.11. | #5113ARTatBerlin | BQ Berlin shows from Friday, 11. September 2026 (Opening: 10.09.) the exhibition “Hauntings” by the artist Carina Brandes.

Carina Brandes (born 1982, Braunschweig) lives and works in Leipzig. In her work, she combines photography, performance and collage to create cinematic visual narratives. She uses her own body as an artistic instrument: with the aid of a self-timer, she documents performative actions that explore the body’s boundaries—both physically and symbolically—in order to re-appropriate the objectifying gaze that rests upon her skin. In her most recent works, however, her own skin is increasingly moving out of focus. Instead, Brandes turns her attention to the photographic surface itself, cutting it up and reassembling it into new visual constellations. The artist’s body remains present – in the empty spaces and lines of fracture that emerge between the fragments.

In her exhibition at BQ, Brandes explores those singular yet recurring moments in which, in the presence of the Other, something comes to light that makes even the most familiar seem alien. Through photographic sequences that intertwine the real and the surreal, she opens up dreamlike visual spaces. Dreams haunt us, just as the spirit does, in order to inscribe once more into her images that which eludes symbolic order.

Opening: Thursday, 10. September 2026, 6 – 10 pm.

Exhibition dates: Friday, 11. September until Saturday, 7. November 2026
