until 06.04. | #3795ARTatBerlin | Galerie Gilla Lörcher presents from 3. March 2023 (Opening: 02.03.) the exhibition ” Himmel und Erde” (“Heaven and Earth”) with small and large format landscape photographies by the artist Ute Schendel, during the European Month of Photography EMOP 2023.
In Ute Schendel’s photographs, landscape appears as a projection space in which natural light directs. Capturing this light in its comprehensive effect and thus directing our gaze to landscape as a continuum across times, spaces and cultures in an unpretentious, almost casual way is the starting point and “core” (…) of Schendel’s landscape motifs. “Each light sets its own accents, allows structures and surfaces to appear, emphasising sections and telling of the history or cultivation of a landscape, or almost blanks it out in the shadowy darkness. Whether moonlight, rays of sunlight, diffuse glow, dull or glaring light: even the slightest gradual difference is finely dosed and precisely coordinated in all the light-dark tones and shades of grey in the black-and-white photographs, which are sometimes reminiscent of drawings or monochrome painting.
