until 01.11. | #2558ARTatBerlin | Crone Berlin currently shows the exhibition Medusa: Floating Body by the artists Tomas Kleiner and Marco Biermann.

The work of Marco Biermann and Tomas Kleiner, who have been working together as a performative collective for the past five years, investigates the interaction of public and individual space in which we may act. Their performances and actions have been exhibited in institutions including Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen, and Belvedere 21 in Vienna.

The exhibition Medusa: Floating Body captures and documents their newest performance, which began on the Rhine near Düsseldorf at the end of June and will continue in the rooms of Galerie Crone in Berlin. The romantic notion of breaking out of routine and taking off for new shores inspired the artists to use Medusa: Floating Body to once again playfully engage with the public space.  The project saw them drift down the Rhine on a specially made air mattress over the course of a day, past the town of Uerding and the city of Duisburg to an unknown destination.

Extensive communication with the authority for water and shipping (DLRG), the coast guard, the local regulatory agency, the district government’s department 26, and Dusseldorf’s aviation authority resulted in an art project created from the finest formulations and reformulations. The childlike wish to simply drift along has been interwoven here with strict regulatory requirements and federal waterway laws, finally flowing into a contemporary, but securely licensed, Freedom 2.0.

The photo and video recordings created during this performance served as the basis for the video installation in the exhibition. This is accompanied by objects, materials, and documents generated while producing the work, as well as related literary and historical sources. Additional performative elements allow visitors to viscerally experience the project’s intention and let oneself just drift along.
