until 18.05. | #4236ARTatBerlin | The LC Art Lab of the Luisa Catucci Gallery shows from 12. April 2024 at Allerstr. 38, Neukölln, the exhibition Synths by the artists Kenconsumer, Anna Lucia and Marcel Schwittlick.

Synths, as manifestations of the human impulse to replicate, reimagine, and reconstruct, is a group exhibition of three artists: Ken Wiatrek, Anna Lucia, and Marcel Schwittlick. Every piece on display serves as a testament to the myriad ways in which artists present the power of synths—be they mechanical contraptions, algorithmic systems, or abstract concepts—to breathe life into their visions.

Synths represent not only mechanical reproductions or musical devices but also serve as metaphors for the union of human creativity and technological innovation. The concept of synths explores the connection between the organic and the artificial, the human and the machine. Just as a drawing machine becomes a synth of the artist’s arm, other forms of mechanical reproduction or design serve as extensions of human expression. The resulting artworks possess a synthetic woven-ness, blending the tactile qualities of the human touch with the precision of mechanical processes. By embracing the concept of synths, artists are able to explore new realms of possibilities, pushing the boundaries of creativity and challenging traditional notions of authorship and authenticity.

Ken Wiatrek, aka Kenconsumer, embarks on an ongoing artistic exploration of existence, focusing on the fundamental essence of Being Anything. Through a combination of hand-drawing, digital techniques, and machine-driven processes, his creations deliberately challenge the distinction between human and mechanized production.

Anna Lucia, a self-taught artist from The Netherlands, explores the tensions and similarities between generative art and traditional crafts, especially textile work. Starting points are often the systematic translation of craft techniques into algorithms involving an element of randomness. Her works span browser-based animations to machine-assisted hand-made artifacts, focusing on the inherent aesthetics of each medium she works in.

Marcel Schwittlick’s work spans generative art and plotter art, where he transforms digital cursor lines into intricate, tangible artworks. With a background in computer science and art, he crafts his pieces using vintage plotters and self-developed algorithms, embracing the machines’ quirks to explore the symbiosis between artist and machine. His practice not only visualizes the intricate dance between control and randomness but also includes an auditory dimension through the distinctive sounds produced by the plotting machines during the creation process.

While each artist offers a distinct perspective and style, they collectively share a commitment to pushing the boundaries of art and technology, delving into conceptual themes, and captivating viewers with immersive and thought-provoking experiences.
