until 16.02. | #2315ARTatBerlin | Galerie Z22 presents from 12th January 2019 the exhibition Landscape with artworks by Skadi Engeln, Kathrin Rank and Manfred Fischer.
Skadi Engeln
Since Skadi Engeln went on the Way of St. James in 2001 and had intensive nature experiences there, she has been intensively involved with landscapes.
As a synonym for “world”, she reflects on the underlying realities. She dissolves nature into light, water and weather. The horizon as a central place in her works connects the above and the below, the before and behind.
The serial division of a motif into several subsurfaces alludes to photo series that document a journey made. It is about the human, observing gaze, its processing and its interaction with the observed, the landscape.
In her current way of working, the landscapes appear covered by a curtain, disturbed or irritated.
Skadi Engeln paints nature in all its beauty. And she paints nature in its beauty disturbed. She thus opens up to the viewer a real view of the landscape of the 21st century.
Kathrin Rank
In Rank’s paintings, figures as well as elements of nature, often through a backlighting situation, become silhouettes. They become carriers of projections and symbolic forms of a universally present yet transparent world of reality and possibilities.
The figures in the landscape are often only hinted at in their corporeality, and the corporeality of the landscape becomes even more apparent.
The encounter between man and landscape in Rank’s pictures takes on a random, contingent form. It gives the picture a metaphysical status of an event.
The artist elevates this romantic conception to an existential form, which she makes experienceable through her painting.
Manfred Fischer
The abstract landscapes by Manfred Fischer from the series “thirty days” can be described with excerpts from a poem by Ingeborg Bachmann:
Her poem “Die Ausfahrt” begins as follows:
“Smoke rises from the land, the small fishermen’s hut remains in sight, because the sun will set before you have covered ten miles.
The dark water, thousand-eyed, opens the eyelash of white spray to look at you, big and long…”. And it ends: “The best thing in the morning, with the first light, is to become bright, to stand against the immovable sky, to ignore the impassable water, and to lift the ship over the waves, towards the recurring shore of the sun.
Manfred Fischer’s “thirty days” landscapes burst out of the small 30×40 format in a wild, angry way.
One sees the forces of nature slumbering, effervescing and becoming calm again.
