until 03.10. | #3183ARTatBerlin | Galerie Z22 shows from 1st October 2021 for three days only the solo show IN EVERY DREAM HOME A HEARTACHE with paintings by the artist Sig Waller. The pop up exhibition was conceived by Z22 and C4.

Sig Waller’s art questions social norms in a clear visual language and sheds light on taboos surrounding family structures. She also takes her artistic position by embedding her themes in a bourgeois society with a touch of pop.

The most recent oil paintings deal with the aspect of deception, within the family or a relationship, but also in society in general. In the series ‘Goodbye to Love’ and ‘Shadow Lines’ Waller creates a timeless parallel world in which sleepwalking protagonists act out their roles. Men are shadowy, absent figures, women are hypnotised and enchanted, children devilish and mischievous; nothing is as it seems.

Waller’s dark, dynamic female figures harbour aspects of the monstrous feminine. This archetype embodies primordial mother, vampire, possessed monster, witch and castrating mother. The monstrous feminine can be read as a symbol of feminist rebellion and lends the works a subversive undertone.

Textile works are another integral part of Waller’s oeuvre. The ‘Fertility Cloths’ are opulent, baroque-looking drawings of fertility symbols on old tablecloths. In the ‘Suburban Blues’ series, wistful excerpts from pop songs are painstakingly hand-embroidered onto tea towels.

Waller says, “To take up the needle is to weave a spell and reclaim authority over anonymous, unpaid female craftsmanship. In the words of Louise Bourgeois, embroidery is an act of self-care, but also an act of resistance.”

A pop up exhibition conceived by Gallery Z22 and C4.
