until 25.01. | #4496ARTatBerlin | Galerie kajetan Berlin presents from 07. Dezember 2024 (Vernissage: 06.12.) the exhibition of the artist Sara Sizer.
Sara Sizer’s Raft, a project for Kajetan Galerie, opens on December 6, 2024. For this exhibition, Sizer presents a series of paintings on cotton/silk fabric. As is characteristic of her work, the choice of substrate—whether velvet, bleached raw linen, or wood—shapes the narrative language of each piece. When ink interacts with silk, certain effects occur naturally. Sizer harnesses and manipulates these organic processes to construct her compositions. While her work may be described as „abstract,“ metaphors emerge through the arrangement, color, and texture of the painted blocks.

Silk, a natural fibre with a rich tradition, which in our western culture is used less in the fine arts than in handicrafts, becomes the decisive carrier of the artistic statement in Sara Sizer’s works. The artist uses the capillary effect of the material to allow colours to fuse together organically, creating dynamic fields of colour and association.

The colours unfold along the threads, flowing in paths that are only partially predictable but controlled by the artist, forming complex, translucent layers of colour. These combine with the precisely placed and accurately finalised forms. In this way, Sizer “builds” an exciting connection of straight and irregular, mostly rectangular colour fields in the height of the picture and creates a canon of sometimes more, sometimes less constructed, pouring forms.

The artist skilfully works with the lightness and heaviness of the colour effects and the application of paint, using both vibrant and softly muted colours. Regardless of the nature of the colour, which is sometimes radiant and rich, sometimes earthy and calm, or the size and visual weight of the form – thanks to the ligree, delicate support material, all the pictures are given an almost poetic lightness.

The individual colours used already have a psychological-emotional quality, which is reinforced by the translucent support material. As artistic colour combinations, however, they respond to Sizer’s associative and poetic titles. “STAY”, “REMIND”, “MONODY” or “BEYOND” open up deeper layers of meaning and identify the purely formal, self-referential paintings as metaphors and emotional landscapes.

In the last room of the exhibition, the artist dispenses with titles and lets the compositions speak for themselves. The paintings here are made up of two colour areas – a section in the lower part of the picture, which is marked by a wooden block print, and the upper part of the picture, which is characterised by rows and crosses of light blue paint. The interplay of the two colour areas creates the impression of landscapes as if by chance. The Raft exhibition can thus be read as an invitation to a visual and associative journey that incorporates the interaction of the materials – silk and pigment – and takes us deeper into emotional levels.

Sara Sizer (b. 1957) is an American painter from Dallas, Texas. She has lived and worked in San Francisco, New York City, and for the past 20 years, in Berlin, Germany.
