until 13.03. | #2980ARTatBerlin | Galerie Poll shows until 13 March 2021 the exhibition Grenzerfahrung with paintings and drawings by the artist Peer Boehm.

Under the title Grenzerfahrung (Border Experience), the Poll Gallery presents the painter and draughtsman Peer Boehm for the first time in a solo exhibition. With drawings, the Cologne artist was already involved in the gallery’s thematic exhibition Remember – Dream – Draw in summer 2019.

In canvas works, watercolours and drawings with biros, Peer Boehm links memories with images of travels and urban spaces. The basis for his motifs are photos he finds in photo albums from flea markets or on the internet.

For the exhibition, Peer Boehm specifically searched for photographic originals related to the former Wall city of Berlin. The exhibition’s title image is composed of two superimposed scenes. The first, dark blue layer shows shadowy cars waiting at a checkpoint, it is Checkpoint Charlie. The other, red layer of images with human silhouettes reveals a throng of journalists pointing their cameras at two men who greet each other solemnly. On the left stands Leonid Brezhnev, opposite him Walter Ulbricht – or is it Erich Honecker? It is up to the viewer to clarify this. Even the Wall can only be located by looking closely: a red line runs diagonally from the left to the right edge of the picture, and an aircraft with a propeller glides over it.

The horizontal format Tug of War, which also concentrates on the colours blue and red, is underpinned in blue by Pariser Platz with the suggested Brandenburg Gate; superimposed in red are the outlines of playing children competing in a tug of war. The title can also refer to the decades-long trial of strength between the Eastern Bloc and the West.

Boehm follows his intuition in the selection of photographic subjects. But there are recurring motifs: the depiction of events stored in the collective memory of a society interests him just as much as personal memories of origin, childhood and family.

Sometimes Boehm names the places depicted, such as Berlin-Müllerstraße. On the narrow vertical format with transparently applied ink and watercolour, passers-by are reflected in the puddles of the rain-soaked pavement. In Daheim ist am schönsten, Berlin’s Tauentzien is recognisable with an old double-decker bus and the now demolished pedestrian bridge that led across this busy street for many years.

Characteristic of Boehm’s pictorial language is the principle of recess, which allows the motifs to emerge from contrasts of light and dark. For this purpose, the artist reduces his picture templates on the computer to what he considers to be the essential forms. The empty spaces open up fields for individual associations. For his drawings, which he likes to present mounted on wood, Peer Boehm also uses found objects such as sea charts or individual pages from account books as image carriers. Origin and home, travel and distance are themes that run through his work. This is made clear by the recurring titles Daheim ist am schönsten and Woanders ist auch schön.
