until 14.01. | #4564ARTatBerlin | LCG ARTLAB (Allerstraße) shows from 08. January 2025 the exhibition I CLOSE MY EYES TO SEE by the artist Parsa Hosseinpour.

Parsa Hosseinpour, an Iranian artist, is currently part of a three-month residency at the Artlab of Luisa Catucci Gallery in Berlin. Her work has consistently fascinated audiences, and this residency marks an exciting and significant milestone in her artistic journey.

Hosseinpour’s art revolves around painting, with a central focus on a solitary female figure. While not a literal self-portrait, this recurring motif serves as a reflection of her inner world, delving into themes of identity, emotion, and personal exploration. Through her practice, these deeply introspective themes resonate on a universal level. During her time in Berlin, she has expanded her work with a striking new series created on textured, hairy blankets. These unconventional canvases cross the boundary of traditional painting, as they are photographed with the artist in natural settings. This approach introduces a dynamic relationship between her art and the environment, pushing the boundaries of her classical roots.

Hosseinpour’s work echoes the emotional depth of Edvard Munch and the delicate nuance of Impressionist art. Her paintings exude a melancholic intensity, capturing shared human experiences that transcend cultural and temporal contexts. Even as she experiments with materials, her work retains a timeless quality, grounded in the traditions of classical art. Her bold, expressive brushstrokes contrast with the subtle balance of her compositions, creating a powerful interplay that draws viewers into her emotive world.

The isolation brought about by the pandemic had a profound impact on her artistic vision. Works from this period depict solitary figures with fragmented heads and contorted forms, turning toward trees as symbols of freedom and connection. Yet these figures remain rooted, conveying a tension between confinement and the longing to break free. A turning point came in 2022, when Hosseinpour traveled to Europe and visited the Venice Biennale and the Musée d’Orsay.

These transformative experiences, combined with encounters with influential artists, challenged her perceptions of art and ignited a profound personal shift. Inspired by the Persian poet Hafez’s words, “You yourself are your own veil… Remove yourself from in between,” she began dismantling self-imposed barriers. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in her practice, characterized by a fluidity that defies cultural, geographical, and gendered boundaries. Her Berlin residency, her first experience living independently, symbolizes this newfound freedom and growth.

Resisting labels such as “Middle Eastern artist” or “woman artist,” Hosseinpour embraces a universal artistic language that is ever-evolving. By integrating art, fabric, and nature, she offers a vision of boundless creativity—one that is pure, unrestrained, and perpetually in motion.
