until 25.01. | #4519ARTatBerlin | Galerie Schindler in Potsdam shows from 28. November 2024 the exhibition FRAMEWORKS of the artist Nicole Heinzel.

“In my work I search for and explore hidden, ambiguous and fragmented parts and aspects of reality – a kind of indescribable ‘essence’ that, if I’m lucky, reveals itself from time to time. Through various methods of alienation and abstraction, sometimes perceived alchemical mutations, analogue and digital ‘filter processes’, as well as through photography, film, sketches and frequent looking with half-closed eyes, I sometimes discover this indescribable that I am looking for.

Methods of alienation/abstraction: I turn motifs around, swap background and foreground, reduce information such as colour, form, depth and detail. Through deconstruction and reconstruction, I play with light and darkness, transforming space into mass, often through digital processing or cutting up. For example, I turn up the contrast to extreme values and study motifs in the negative.

Nature plays an important and original role, as it serves as a perfect portal to these hidden worlds. I work with basic forms. I focus on the positive and negative organic forms of plants, their leaves, found objects such as stones or feathers, trees, meadows, forests, water surfaces, clouds, mountains and landscapes – and I am particularly interested in the empty spaces in between, which I sometimes also depict as positive forms, so that nothing becomes something. Space becomes mass. What is not painted is also of great importance: presence through absence. Shadow often becomes the third element. Light + mass = effect.

The title of this exhibition, ‘FRAMEWORKS’, refers to the parameters or frameworks I set for my work. The frameworks – you could also call them rules, scaffolding or skeletons – are like a hidden structure on which I can hang or orientate my work, perhaps like a clothes rack or a signpost, a compass that guides me in my practice, but also a kind of bridle and reins that give me some control and support.

These self-imposed frameworks prevent me from losing myself, because as an artist I have endless possibilities. One of the frameworks is to only use what is right in front of me. Not to dig too deep for things because I will discover too much and then too much superfluous stuff will be packed in. It’s not possible to process everything. The here and now and the art itself are enough.

These frameworks are my anchor and create intention in my work. This is how I guide my exploration in a focussed space, evoke the ‘essentials’ and hide a lot of things.”
