until 13.04. | #4174ARTatBerlin | Aurel Scheibler shows from 1. March 2024 the exhibition Day Release by the artist Neil Gall.

In his fifth solo exhibition at Aurel Scheibler Day Release, Neil Gall is showing the most extensive presentation of his sculptures to date along with some of his recent paintings.

Neil Gall is known for his imaginative arrangements that run through his painting, sculpture and drawing work. Their playful and poetic quality is enhanced by the pictorial illusion of everyday materials. The artist’s suggested title of the exhibition, Day Release, makes an ironic, sentimental reference to a day with limited freedom. For Gall, the question arises of who or what has freedom here: perhaps his sculptures, which, in their essence, have become dear to the artist in his studio and are now released for his exhibition in Berlin on the European mainland. Often they were props for his paintings, but here they are independent objects that, in their partly amorphous figurations, recall fantastical beings.

Good-for-Nothing, the title of one of the works, whose form could very well find its way into his painting, is the brightly colored cast of an assemblage of ping-pong balls wrapped in tape on a shabby piece of wood abused as a base. The title implies not so much the impossibility of reusing the object as a motif for a painted picture but questions the object itself. It is certainly humorous and worth being painted, drawn, or translated into sculpture.

Even in his painting, one must be aware, as it surprises and becomes recognizable as painting only upon closer inspection. The motifs on canvas are brought with precision and extreme sharpness. He arranges the most diverse things and materials into hybrid objects created solely for the purpose of representation.A painting without a history beyond its own – a painting without the representation of anything beyond itself.

Neil Gall, born in 1967 in Aberdeen, Scotland, studied at the Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and the Slade School of Art in London. His works are in renowned collections such as the Denver Art Museum,The Morgan Library & Museum, New York, The British Museum, London, Zabludowicz Art Trust, London, Aberdeen City Art Gallery, David Roberts Arts Foundation, London, Christen Sveaas Art Collection, Oslo, and Sammlung Schürmann, Herzogenrath.
