Until 11.06. | #3467ARTatBerlin | Köppe Contemporary presents from 17. May 2022 (Opening: 13.05.) the solo exhibition Oscillation by the artist Julia Benz.

Oscillation, the title of the exhibition, shows recent works that, based on the (acrylic) glass installations of recent years, deal with the colour spectrum of refracted light. In interaction with the burnt-in dyes, the exhibited glass works use light as a design element and at the same time as a transformative force. In the varying appearance of those installation objects, Julia Benz brings together the immaterial properties of light with the material properties of painting. As an integral part of the reception of the work, the glass objects and their colour impression are revealed to the viewer depending on the viewing position and angle.

Julia Benz, Refraction of Light, 2022, 160 x 120 x 4,5 cm, Acrylic and spray paint on canvas

In her latest canvas works, Julia Benz is looking for a way to translate the effect of light refraction through a prism, which can be observed in the glass objects, into painting. Light functions here as a source of design and its refraction as an inspiration for colour. Breaking away from the two-dimensional surface, the artist discovered the potential of painting that reaches into space. The return to painting on canvas does not represent a step backwards, but reveals the mutual influence of the media forms of representation.

Although her works are determined by expressive painterly gestures and dynamic compositions of colour and form, calm, almost static moments can also be found in them time and again. Movement and stillness constitute the theme of the past two pandemic years, in which quiet phases in the artist’s life were followed by explosive times marked by inspiration and creation. Just as Julia Benz tries to find the point of rest in her painting, only to escape from it again, the oscillation between the two opposing states characterises her way of working and living.
