until 31.08. | #2075ARTatBerlin | rk – Galerie für zeitgenössische Kunst im Rathaus Lichtenberg shows from 11th July 2018 the group exhibition HEIM_Spiel Lichtenberg of Frauenmuseum Berlin e.V. with several female artists from Lichtenberg.

It has always been a special concern of the rk Gallery for Contemporary Art, professional artists living and working in the district to offer a podium, to create a way to present their artistic work to the public in their “HOME”.

Numerous artists have applied for the invitation to this exhibition. Nine artists who live in Lichtenberg or have their studio in the district were selected by a jury to present their works of art on the subject.

Heim_Spiel is an exhibition series developed by the Frauenmuseum Berlin e.V., which will be realized over a period of several years in various districts of Berlin and invites to an examination of the topic “home”. The idea of the series is to offer the artists of a particular district a forum there as well. A career in the art world is, especially women with children, rarely granted. They have to do more, work more, be offensive and “better” than their male counterparts in order to be perceived as professional artists.

Especially in recent years, the Lichtenberg art and cultural scene is undergoing a major transformation. According to a study by the Institute for Urban Development in 2011, only 0.5% of Berlin’s artists lived in Lichtenberg, which corresponded to the penultimate place. This may have changed significantly in the meantime, because it is well known that rents have become increasingly priceless in the central locations of Berlin, even for studio rooms. In recent years, therefore, numerous studio communities have been founded in former empty industrial buildings, which unites and networks a local and international art community and thus radiates far beyond the boundaries of the district. The exhibition HEIM_SPIEL Lichtenberg reflects unintentionally exactly these developments: works of art are shown by women, some of whom live in Lichtenberg for many years, but also by young artists, born in Israel or the USA, who have found a home in Berlin and in Lichtenberg working in the new studios.

A catalog accompanies the exhibition.
