until 09.08. | #5111ARTatBerlin | Galerie Creative Game presents from Friday, 31. July 2026 the exhibition Der weibliche Blick (The Female Gaze) with works by the artist Gisela Breitling.
The gallery is dedicating a retrospective to the artist Gisela Breitling – an artist who was ahead of her time. As early as the 1960s, Breitling’s work articulated a perspective that is now discussed under the term ‘female gaze’: the gaze of women as agents and reflectors.
Yet whilst this concept only became part of art-theoretical and social discourse decades later, Breitling developed it consistently and radically independently within her painting. Her paintings depict women not as a projection screen, but as spaces of consciousness. They defy traditional role models as well as art-historical attributions, and open up a new, intimate visual language that bridges Renaissance echoes and existential contemporaneity.

This exhibition represents a reassessment. For despite international exhibitions and her works finding their way into high-profile collections and museums, Gisela Breitling deliberately distanced herself from the mechanisms of the art market. Rather than pursuing a strategic career, she adopted an artistic stance based on autonomy and consistency of content.
This decision has meant that, whilst her work is now represented in major collections, it has not been firmly established within the canon to the extent that its relevance warrants.
It is precisely this that makes this retrospective so urgent: Gisela Breitling epitomises a generation of female artists whose significance only becomes apparent in hindsight – not in spite of, but because of their independence from the market.

The exhibition therefore poses two central questions: How does our view of art history change when we interpret it from the perspective of those who have long been overlooked? And which artistic positions are worth rediscovering today, precisely because they deliberately eluded the logic of visibility and commercial exploitability?
At a time when questions of authorship, regimes of the gaze and representation are more relevant than ever, Breitling’s work appears not as a historical document, but as a surprisingly contemporary stance. To see Gisela Breitling anew is to understand the present differently.
