Gerhard Richter often uses photographs and press documentations as a starting point for his paintings, graphics and drawings. For him, even the selection of the photograph is the first step to the artwork: “I try not to find anything tangible. So it’s a kind of escape.”

Editions and works on paper are a central figure of his artistic practice. He alters details and sometimes entire compositions of existing works, creating artworks that are, as it were, self-referential and original. Varying in medium, dimension, and style, Richter’s works reflect shifting artistic processes and explore the dynamic relationship between source work and pictorial representation.

Many of Richter’s strictly limited edition prints are based on personal photographs. He made his earliest edition, Dog (1965), by stroking a brush over a still-wet silkscreen; blurred with a visible texture of brush hairs, the resulting image is a work that references both painting and photography.

The exhibition highlights artistic output spanning 6 decades. With no less than 4 works from the 1960s, we show a significant section of the editorial early work. The most recently published works “Sils” (2016) and “Mao” (2019) form the chronological final act of a search for traces, which always balances between unique and print.
