until 25.02. | #3761ARTatBerlin | KLEMM’S presents from January 21, 2023 (opening: 20.01.) the exhibition “No Moon” by artist Fiona Mackay.
A lone figure stands on the edge of a ship, testing the air with her foot – a simple image, whose meaning goes far beyond its own depiction. A glimpse of an open narrative, in which different stories and characters reverberate in the exhibition space like sound waves – being radically open to subjective perception.
No Moon is Fiona Mackay’s third solo show at Klemm’s, a thoughtful journey into reoccurring dreams, gestures, motifs, and colours. Her heterogeneous images purposefully disrupt the viewers’ own expectations of painting, contradicting or totally evading any fixed meaning to instead interrogate the ‘fragileness’ of how an image can be held, or understood.
Mackay’s paintings can be most accurately understood as self conscious critiques of the form. Actively avoiding a visual brand, the show comes directly after the artist’s printed drawing series of sexually charged characters and their own narratives, engaging with painterly storytelling which playfully experiments with gestural mark marking and wordplay. The beginnings of these visual tales lie between personal narration and a system of references or associative terms – words and objects as ‘roots’, whispering to curious eyes of those who venture into this intimate realm, raising questions which answers are not easily found.
“I’m really thinking about this woman on the boat, right now, exactly now – should she jump or should she watch the sunset?”
