until 19.10. | #2539ARTatBerlin | Salongalerie Die Möwe presents from 4th September 2019 the exhibition  Stolze Ruhe und magische Kraft (> proud tranquillity and magical power) with wood works by the Berlin artist Dieter Finke.

From September 4 to October 19, 2019, the Berlin Salongalerie “Die Möwe” will be showing works in wood from the extensive and fascinating oeuvre of the Berlin sculptor and painter Dieter Finke (1939-2011). Following a solo exhibition last year, which gave an overview of Dieter Finke’s oeuvre, this selection provides a closer look at a particularly diverse area of his art. The large-format animal portraits and sculptures in the current exhibition demonstrate the artist’s excellent handling of wood as a material and oscillate between abstraction and representationalism, between surface and three-dimensionality.

Dieter Finke’s interest in depicting animals has accompanied him through five decades of artistic creation. He modelled his first animal sculptures at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin, where he studied sculpture with Paul Dierkes and Renée Sintenis from 1959 to 1965. When Dieter Finke lived in New York for a long time from 1974, he turned increasingly to animal sculpture and experimented with various materials. Animal paintings from the exhibition from 2000 show how effectively he was able to use sculptural means of design as a painter. He strengthened the expression of naturalness, wildness and expressivity by working on the animal portraits painted on wooden plates with a chain saw in the final step.

These representations find an exciting counterpart in the exhibition in the archaic-looking wooden sculptures. Here, the artist plays with light, transparency, spaces and rhythm, which reveal an essential characteristic of his work: The immaterial is just as important to him as the material. Thanks to this balance, his sculptures radiate a proud calm and almost magical power.
