68projects is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of artist Cristina BanBan in Germany, I’ve got nothing to lose. The exhibition includes several large scale dynamic paintings and drawings including works made in Berlin last October during BanBan’s 68projects residency. BanBan’s figurative work depicts voluptuous female bodies and narratives beginning with the artist’s personal experience as a point of departure. Her paintings document her everyday life and emotions with honesty and confidence. She chooses to depict a body performing the extremes of flexibility and motion.
Women are the stars in BanBan’s work. Ballooning to envelop the entirety of the canvas, the figures in her paintings unapologetically take up space with their flesh. Their shapely forms reclaim the traditional authority of the male gazeand reorient the significance of the female figure. BanBan’s work At the Studio the reclining figure sits on a red plush chair and looks decidedly out towards the viewer. Dressed in white shorts and crocs the woman lifts up her bra to reveal a coral colored nipple being held open with an oversized hand nearly two times the size of the figure’s head.
Single parts of the human figure begin to represent certain emotions, from confident eyes to empowering large hands and at times shyness through a seductive tilt of the head. Her characters’ gestures encompass the whole complexity of emotions that BanBan herself experiences. The palette in BanBan’s works for I’ve got nothing to loseis high key and desaturated with moments of pop color by which the direction of the viewer’s gaze within the painting is indicated. Rather than creating works of art purely made to shock and provoke a certain reaction, BanBan seeks to provide a sense of tranquillity and joy through much of her art. Her most important conviction is that art should be able to be understood. People ’’get’’her paintings and drawings be- cause her art is straightforward – there is no need for a complimentary explanation.
BanBan depicts members of the society in which she lives. Her particularity lies in her ability to capture not their exact likeness, but their character and inner life with a rare and penetrating insight. Her paintings evoke a tangible presence and are remarkable for their vitality, directness and immediacy. BanBan’s art combines the vibrancy, boldness and sense of hyperbolic humor and she makes the recipients feel close to sensuousness of form as in the work of the great naïve artists.

Cristina BanBan (b.1987, Barcelona, Spain) lives and works in London. She obtained a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona and recently has been awarded with the Arts Club Prize from the Summer Exhibition at the royal Academy. BanBan recently had her first solo exhibition in the USA at 1969 Gallery in New York. Moreover, she has held a solo exhibition at the Dot Project in London, UK and a group exhibition at Art Brussels, Belgium. Her works have been included in numerous exhibitions, including a show at The Hole in New York, USA and the Cob Gallery in London, UK, among others. Her work is held in Rema Horts Man Foundation collection and in many international private collections.
