until 04.02. | #1778ARTatBerlin | Michael Reid Gallery presents from 5th January 2018 the exhibition”Finlandia” by the artist Chris Twiney.

Chris Twiney’s new series of work presented in FINLANDIA seeks to identify how Finland is portrayed in the worldwide media. On one hand, Finland is depicted as being one of the best countries in the world for education and quality of life. However, on the other hand, it is shown to have alarming domestic violence and alcohol issues. These contradictory statistics and headlines from a wide source of media organisations are turned into text paintings, which are then installed and photographed in the idyllic Finnish countryside. This work offers his audience a chance to stop and reflect on the power of the media and the influence it has shaping our perception of the world in which we live.

Chris Twiney was born in Sydney, Australia in 1989. Chris is an emerging sociopolitical artist who works across painting, photography and sculpture. In 2013 Chris completed a Bachelor of Visual Art (Hons.) at the ANU School of Art in Canberra. In 2016 Chris completed a two-month residency at Haihatus Art Centre in Joutsa Finland, this is where Chris began his new series and returned at the beginning of 2017 to finish it. Chris now lives and works in London, England.
