until 27.10. | #2205ARTatBerlin | Galerie ART CRU Berlin shows from 14th September 2018 in the framework of the 10th anniversary of the gallery artworks by Peter Pankow, Betty Feix, Christo Lufundiso Luanza and Melanie Edwards.
Peter Pankow (*1968) works in the Thikwa Workshop for Theater and Art. Its baroque painterly feel, at first glance, thanks to its color and format, has a powerful and impressive effect. On a closer look, complex relationships emerge from figurative and delicately colored narrative. His leaves are his mental deposits, which he plows with needles and exposes again. There are precise notes or protocols about themselves, as superego, Unterich, Altich and Neuich. Words and descriptions of his searches, which Pankow also uses on stage, when he gives information about himself. The artist has been exhibited many times, has been awarded the Lothar-Späth-Förderpreis and the European Art Award / EUCREA Prize and nominated for the euward 7 in 2014.
The art of Betty Feix (born 1990) emerges in books or on canvases and is about her dreams, in the middle of which the artist often writes or paints herself, weddings, trips to the South Seas or bizarre encounters of her characters. Characteristic of the canvas works is almost always a bright blue background on which the artist sets her protagonists in scene. The combination of image and narrative creates a world of rousing dynamics, full of vibrant colors, joy and riches. The clear and powerful compositions are rousing through contagious optimistic charm. Betty Feix works in the artist group Blumenfisch. Her works have been produced by Galerie u.a. presented at the Outsider Art Fair Paris 2014 and art KARLSRUHE 2016.
Christo Lufundiso Luanza has been working for many years in the art group imPerfekt in different techniques between drawing, painting and sculpture on his characteristic figures. These “gender and ageless white stick figures” were “transferred from paper to three-dimensionality” by him (Der Tagesspiegel 2014, Michael Nungesser). The gallery showed works of the artist u.a. at POSITIONS Art Fair Berlin during the BERLIN ART WEEK and at art KARLSRUHE.
Melanie Edwards (born 1982 in St. Antonio, Texas, USA) works with a variety of materials, in addition to colored pencil, felt-tip pens, pens, ink and highlighters, also with leaf metals and collage technique. In images bearing titles like “Gentle Spirals in Gray” or “Aurorafenster”, turbulent and enchanted inner worlds arise. The artist works in the day center “Leolo” of the prenzlkomm gGmbH.
Since 2008 Galerie ART CRU Berlin has been Berlin’s only gallery for so-called Outsider Art. This term (introduced in 1972 by Roger Cardinal as a synonym of the term “Art Brut” coined by the painter Jean Dubuffet in 1945) designates the art of people with psychiatric experience or intellectual disabilities. We are convinced that the special perception of these artists is represented in unique works of art of high authenticity. With our exhibitions we present works by “outsiders” as an important part of contemporary art and thus want to stimulate an active discourse with the established art business. Located in the Kunsthof on Oranienburger Straße, the gallery brings works by people with a special experience right into the heart of Berlin’s art scene. The non-profit gallery ART CRU Berlin is sponsored by PS-Art e.V. Berlin, a network of various psychosocial institutions. Initiator of the project, director of the gallery and chairwoman of the association is Alexandra von Gersdorff-Bultmann.
On the occasion of the gallery’s fifth anniversary, a chronicle has been published containing the exhibition catalogs from 2008-13. In 2014, the gallery was first able to attend the Outsider Art Fair in Paris, Europe’s most important fair for “outsider art”. In the same year, five artists from the PS-Art e.V. Berlin network were nominated for the Euward International Art Prize.
