Galerie EIGEN presents Riding In Cars With Boys, the first solo exhibition of South African artist Brett Charles Seiler in Europe. The artist, who has been enrolled in Galerie EIGEN + ART’s programme since 2021, lives and works in Cape Town, where Seiler completed his art studies at the Ruth Prowse School of Art in 2015.
Brett Charles Seiler’s work includes elements of painting, drawing, installation and object art; text and language also play an important role. Sometimes poetic, nostalgic or romantic, it is an integral part of his art or stands on its own as a work. In his paintings, space is indeterminate, the figures are not located but sketchy and fleeting, the textual elements seem spontaneous. The colours move in a narrow spectrum between shades of black, grey, white and brown; mixed variations of the material he mainly uses: Bitumen. Wood is also frequently used. These simple and rather crude materials, normally used in the construction of roads or houses, contrast with the intimate and tender situations in the painting. Gender, relationships, self-determination and self-discovery are central themes in her work. As Seiler comes from Zimbabwe, a state where homosexual acts between men are punished by law, his works are also a sign of egalitarian sexual orientation.
