The exhibition will be opened by Isaac Castellano, Minister of Tourism and Culture of the Canary Islands, in the presence of the artists. The exhibition is curated by Michael Steiner, who had already held numerous exhibitions with César Manrique in Germany in the 1980s. Damián Peña, from Sociedad CANARIAS EN EUROPA (the Canary Islands’ Society for the Promotion of Foreign Cultural Development), acts as curator on behalf of the Canary Islands.
The finissage will take place on Friday 13 April 2018 at 7.30 pm.
The exhibition provides an insight into the contemporary art of the Canary Islands. Five artists from the Canary Islands introduce themselves. Five artists who convey their very own perspectives, views and insights into the island’s existence, but who, despite their diversity, also have similarities and connecting elements. Life experiences and paths that cross and become alienated again, parallels in development, but which drift apart again due to certain influences.
Dácil Granados, Serial IN-OUT 2017, Collage 02
They are women artists of different ages, but their origins and descents, as well as their living and working environments, represent practically a cross-section of the contemporary art and cultural scene and the social reality of the Canary Islands. The thematic basis of the exhibition is the concept and understanding of ISLAND and ISLAND EXISTENCE, but not only from a purely geographical point of view or perspective.
