until 16.11. | #2597ARTatBerlin | Galerie mutare shows from 12th October 2019 the exhibition A Lifetime Achievement with paintings and graphics by the artist Alo Altripp.

Alo Altripp, born 1906 in Altrip near Speyer, attended the Kunstgewerbeschule Mainz (applied arts, decorative painting) in 1921-24, followed by the Meisterschule für das Malerhandwerk in Munich and the Akademie für Kunst und Gewerbe in Dresden in 1925. In 1928/29 Altripp worked as a theatre painter at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, then as a freelance artist. In 1932 he met Alexej Jawlensky for the first time and became his friend in 1934. He travelled to Strasbourg and Colmar, in the period 1935-39 he completed annual study stays at the Goetheanum in Dornach. He regularly visited Paul Klee and his family in Bern. 1943-45 he was employed as a draughtsman at the Opel company in Rüsselsheim, 1945-49 also as a draughtsman at the Central Collecting Point in the Wiesbaden Museum. In 1949 he stayed in New York with a scholarship from the Barnes Foundation, Merion. 1951-71 he taught as a lecturer at the Werkkunstschule Wiesbaden, today the Hochschule RheinMain. In 1976 he was awarded the Max Slevogt Medal of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. The artist died in Wiesbaden in 1991.

His works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including 1946 Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstausstellung, Dresden, 1948 Kölnischer Kunstverein “Alo Altripp/Edgar Ende”, Cologne, 1949 New York, 1954 Museum, Witten, 1955/57 Neue Aachener Gruppe, Suermondt-Museum, Aachen, 1963 Neue Gruppe, Grosse Kunstausstellung im Haus der Kunst, as well as regularly in Basel and Mainz.

From October 2019, a representative cross-section of ALO ALTRIPPS’ life’s work will be exhibited in a project by the Berlin gallery MUTARE and the gallery REFUGIUM, Insel Usedom (here from 5 October 2019).

On the occasion of this exhibition project a catalogue of the gallery MUTARE will be published, in which the classification of the works of Alo Altripp into the respective time of their creation will be explained in detail (German/English).

Prof. Michael Altripp, the painter’s son, will introduce the exhibition and will be available for questions afterwards.
