A UTOPIAN STAGE | SAVVY Contemporary | 24.03.–27.04.2019

until 27.04. | #2408ARTatBerlin | SAVVY Contemporary shows from 24th March 2019 the exhibition A UTOPIAN STAGE, an exhibition about the Festival of Arts, Shiraz-Persepolis (1967–1977) curated by Vali Mahlouji / Archaeology of the Final Decade, in the framework of the MaerzMusik–Festival für Zeitfragen.

We cordially invite you to our next cooperation with MaerzMusik – Festival für Zeitfragen. A Utopian Stage is an exhibition curated by Vali Mahlouji about the Festival of Arts, a radical art and culture festival for performing arts in Shiraz and the ancient ruins of Persepolis, which took place every summer between 1967 and 1977. The festival developed visions of heterogeneous encounters between artistic discourses, rejected the idea of a unified global culture, and proposed a democratic sphere for relationships that involved international, marginalized communities. All materials associated with the festival continue to be banned in Iran, so the exploration of festival materials today is an important gesture to make visible the transgressive platform, the afterlife, and the creative connections it has created across the division between global South and North.

Orghast (Part I and II), written by Ted Hughes and Mahin Tajadod, directed by Peter Brook, Arby Ovanessian, Geoffrey Reeves and Andrei Serban, International Center for Theatre Research, commissioned by the Festival of Arts, Shiraz, and the French Ministry of Culture, Persepolis 1971, courtesy of the Festival of Arts, Shiraz-Persepolis and Archaeology of the Final Decade.

A Utopian Stage opens on 23.03.2019 together with another MaerzMusik project: Tele-Visions, in the new Betonhalle in the silent green Kulturquartier, where we will experience a special performance of Iannis Xenakis’ band composition Persepolis (sound direction: Daniel Teige). The composition was originally commissioned by the Festival of Arts in Shiraz in 1969 and premiered there. Persepolis creates a tonal connection between the two exhibitions.
